The Large Macaw
published by: DeniseMichard
A macaw bird is one of the most well-known exotic bird; just looking at a picture of this bird in an aviary will brighten your day. There are about 30 species of these parrots. In the wild, they live in tropical forests and savannahs of South America and Africa, but their numbers continuously decrease because of environmental pollution, habitat destruction and pet trade. Some species live only in captivity nowadays.***Some of you have been asking how I did this - I was in the right place at the right time, as was he and the sun!

Rainbow Lorikeet - 2nd Place - Thank You!!!! Hugs to all!
published by: DeniseMichard
Rainbow lorikeets are popular pets in Australia and are a constant source of amusement for their owners. They are constantly playing with behavior at times more reminiscent of a kitten than a bird. One of their favorite tricks is to go to sleep lying on their back with feet up in the air, looking rather dead, until the scream of horror wakes them up, and they bound to their feet!

EASTERN MEADOWLARK
published by: umpa1
The eastern Meadowlark is a robin sized, brown streaked bird with a white edged tail, bright yellow throat and breast. Its breast is crossed with a V. Its song is a clear mellow whistle...see-you, see-yeeer. It also has a loud rattling alarm note. One of the best-known birds of the prairie farmlands. The Eastern Meadowlark usually delivers his song from a conspiicous perch.

The toucan in its native habitat would typically exist on fruits and some smaller organisms like rodents, insects, or lizards

I've always been a big fan of Woody so naturally, I've always loved these big, beautiful birds. They are very shy birds though. Much to my joy, this fella didn't mind my presence even one little bit. He just dug for food, and occasionally looked over and chattered at me.

Red Shoulder Hawk
published by: w5kbd
A common forest-dwelling hawk of the East and California, the Red-shouldered Hawk favors woodlands near water. It is perhaps the most vocal American hawk.
Cool Facts
The Red-shouldered Hawk is divided into five subspecies. The four eastern forms contact each other, but the West Coast form is separated from the eastern forms by 1600 km (1000 mi). The northern form is the largest. The form in very southern Florida is the palest, having a gray head and very faint barring on the chest.
Although the American Crow often mobs the Red-shouldered Hawk, sometimes the relationship is not so one-sided. They may chase each other and try to steal food from each other. They may also both attack a Great Horned Owl and join forces to chase the owl out of the hawk's territory.
By the time they are five days old, nestling Red-shouldered Hawks can shoot their feces over the edge of their nest. Bird poop on the ground is a sign of an active nest.
The Great Horned Owl often takes nestling Red-shouldered Hawks, but the hawk occasionally turns the tables. While a Red-shouldered Hawk was observed chasing a Great Horned Owl, its mate took a young owl out of its nest and ate it.

Osprey on the look out
published by: w5kbd
One of the largest birds of prey in North America, the Osprey eats almost exclusively fish. It is one of the most widespread birds in the world, found on all continents except Antarctica.
Description

Sex Differences
Sexes similar; female larger and tends to have fuller and darker chest band.
Sound
Calls are short, chirping whistles
»listen to songs of this species
topConservation Status
Osprey numbers declined drastically in 1950-1970s, from pesticide poisoning and eggshell thinning. After the ban on DDT, populations increased rapidly. Still listed as endangered or threatened in some states, especially in inland states where populations were small or extirpated after the pesticide years.
Other Names
Balbuzard pêcheur (French)
Gavilán pescador (Spanish)
Cool Facts
The Osprey readily builds its nest on manmade structures, such as telephone poles, channel markers, duck blinds, and nest platforms designed especially for it. Such platforms have become an important tool in reestablishing Ospreys in areas where they had disappeared. In some areas nests are placed almost exclusively on artificial structures.
Osprey eggs do not hatch all at once, but instead the first chick hatches out up to five days before the last one. The older chick dominates its younger siblings, and can monopolize the food brought by the parents. If food is abundant, little aggression is seen amongst the chicks, but if food is limited, the younger chicks often starve.
The Osprey is a fish-eating specialist, with live fish accounting for about 99% of its diet. Barbed pads on the soles of its feet help it grip slippery fish. When an Osprey takes a large fish to its nest, it carries the fish headfirst to make it as aerodynamic as possible.

Male Cardinal Feeding a Cowbird Baby
published by: stratford804
There is a sad side to this unusual series of photos. Adult cowbirds "plant" their eggs in other birds' nests, for the other birds to raise the young. Because the cowbird babies are larger than the other birds' real babies, they can nudge the other birds out of the nest. So, this series of photos could possibly mean that a cardinal baby was lost for the adult cardinals to raise this cowbird as their own.

Scarlet Macaw ~ Ara Macao ~ Maui Hawai'i
published by: ourjrny
Easily distinguished from amazons and cockatoos by their bare facial patch and long pointed tail, the Macaw family comprises one of the most extravagantly coloured in the bird world. There are several variations of the Scarlet, most notably an uncommon variety with emerald green on the wing along with the yellow, and the more common wide patch of yellow. Their declining populations in the wild continues to cause great concern for tropical environmentalists. They are flamboyant, colourful, and captivating birds. Their personalities are legendary. Because of their great beauty and engaging personalities, they have been kept in captivity for centuries. In fact, in the United States, they were kept by the Pueblo Indians since 1100 A.D. where they prized the Scarlet Macaw. The pairs can be seen cooing everywhere in the city suburbs, gardens and lawns. A dainty little active bird.

The neck has a lacy white collar of very fine white feathers. His friend is a Bellbird, another honeyeater.

These young flamingoes which were photographed on the salt marshes near the Gulf of Cagliari in Sardenia Italy have not yet acquired the bright coloring of the older, pink flamingoes. I particularly liked this photoraph as the resting flamingoes seem to mimic the stumps protruding out of the water.

The Mallard Duck Mom and Babies Swim with the Big Fish
published by: photoop23
In the Japanese Gardens at the Missouri Botanical Gardens, pellets of fish food can be purchased and thrown to the Koi in the lake. The Koi are huge probably weighing more than 25 lbs. each. The ducks join in for the treats also. If you look closely, you will see some Koi below the surface of the water and the baby ducks don't seem afraid to swim over them. P1290506

This seagull is at Shepherd Lake in Ringwood State Park near Skylands Manor. this was taken last summer, 2007. This funny gull was eating the roll and scolding me at the same time - I think he was afraid I would steal his treasure! This lake is/was a favorite spot for my family to go and swim. Unfortunately this year we will not be able to enjoy this state park lake, since our "wonderful" governor has decided to close many state parks, especially those with swimming lakes, to save money. Funny, this is public/state protected land and I thought my mom's taxes help pay for us to be able to enjoy them......

Goodmorning Little Hummingbird
published by: _yoko12
Hummingbirds get the energy they need to maintain their astonishing metabolism primarily from flower nectar and the sugar water they find at feeders. For protein and other nutrients, they also eat soft-bodied insects and spiders; I like Bob Sargent's perspective: "Hummers need nectar to power the bug eating machine that they are." Think of them as miniature flycatchers, and sugar is just the fuel for getting their real nourishment. Here's the recipe for artificial nectar (syrup): Use one part ordinary white cane sugar to four parts water. It's not necessary to boil the water. The microorganisms that cause fermentation don't come from the water; they are transported to the feeder on hummingbird bills. Store unused syrup in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. This mixture approximates the average sucrose content (about 21%) of the flowers favored by North American hummingbirds, without being so sweet it attracts too many insects.
