His body hair is still wet here. I used an f2.8 100 mm Macro lens from less than 6 inches. He stayed for about 100 photos constantly cleaning himself all over. The back ground is the side of my pool.

The answer to black holes..the stars are sucked into the void and obviously emerge as butterflys.

We decided to put it on the porceline berry which the Japanese beetles love. Hopefully the preying mantis likes them as much.

What a beauty, she was returned to the pennisetum grass where she will hopefully lay an egg case in the fall. there are some "vs" in there also, even a z, but I like the M of her legs.

REAL BUGS!!!

This one was bigger than my whole hand. Normal wingspan is 4 to 7 inches. Seen on a boxwood in my East NC front yard

These beauties (??) are fascinating to watch. This one lives next to my front porch. I am an arachnophobe but, since these don't leave their web and eat nasty bugs, I let them be.

Another moth nearly as big as my hand

We found lots of these guys but only a few would stay around to pose. Most took off to the interior when we found then on the beach. I looked up their name in www.enature.com where I could match my picture to theirs.

The color combinations on this guy were fabulous. I can see doing a room in that green and navy with yellow trim. This is a cloudless sulfur caterpillar.

Not sure what it is but thought it was cute with the funny feet.

It is not much more than an inch long with a blue dot on its' tail.

I found this guy near the boardwalk, headed for the beach. I wonder if he was going for a swim or trying to get a tan?

This spider was almost invisible because of how it blended in with the bark of the tree.

Just after it emerged from it's shell.

It was almost as big as my thumb.

At first I thought it was a hummingbird sipping on my Columbine.

This bumblebee nests on or above ground & has a wide range of habitats. Often flies well into November. There is a little pollen beetle hiding in bottom left hand corner.

Aeshna grandis. I found this one just emerged & still drying off it's wings so was able to get close. Wish I had the vision of those eyes!

Fairly rare in UK & only found in southern locations. Difficult to see even in those locations unless conditions are right. Drooled over by butterfly enthusiasts & often called "His Imperial Majesty". The purple colour only shows if the angle to the light is just right, otherwise can look quite brown. They do as this one has done come down to ground & use their probocis to take up minerals from mud or some times animal excrement! The caterpiller lives mainly on goat willow (sallow).

It's not a chameleon, it's an Anole.

One of my cats, Cloe, had caught this dragonfly. I rescued him and while I had him inside recuperating I figured it was a good picture moment.

I suppose these two Garden Spiders (Argiope aurantia) were flirting, at least they held this pose for hours. Eventually they settled down ad did whatever spiders do, then lived together on the same web for a while. She is the great big one, he is the itty bitty one.

This large brown spider makes you look twice when you pass the Art Institute.

The butterflies were drawn to the flower bed last summer, but this is the best shot I got.

The Thirteen Year Cicadas were just coming out when we went to the lake for Memorial Day. I never knew they had red eyes before. They are quite exquisite creatures.

I am not a bug person, but when I found this dragonfly by the pond at Ringwood Manor in the summer of 2009, I went crazy trying to get his photo. May not be as outstanding as other ones here, but I was excited I got it. closest I have been to a real dragonfly and he is beautiful

I rescued a Praying Mantis from a spider's web; the greatful creature sat happily on my finger and cleaned the web from its legs, while I took photos.

When a tiny Redback spider, one of the most venemous spiders in the land, meets a giant Huntsman spider, one of the most harmless, size counts for nothing, and the Redback wins the day.

Grass Hoppers are masters of camouflage. Ocassonally I bust their cover, and still they sit tight and pretend to be part of the scenery. This one was on a dead weed, there wasn't much cover, but it blended well all the same.

Right above this catepillar's head you can see where it ate a chunck of the flower storing up food for a long winter's hibernation so that next summer it will be a beautiful Butterfly.

This is one gorgeous butterfly. Almost like it was posing for me. It has beautiful crisp colors at the bottom of its wings, and it has can get deep into any flower it finds its favorite nectar in.

Bunble Bees aren't really aerodynamic to begin with. With this bee's little wings, its a wonder he can fly at all.

One of the South's loud but rarely seen insects! Our Southern ones are called 13- Yr. Cicadas, altho some broods may appear each year from small holes in the ground!

Caleb was helping weed in the flower beds and found this "stick" he thought. Then it moved. Of course, we had to have a picture so we placed it on the bark of a tree. Emma kept watch so we didn't lose it while I went to get my camera. Caleb seems to find all the neat things. Must have his eyes open. Really looks great full size.

Taken on Lake Nacimento while cruising the lake with family. Only able to take one shot as my daughter came in when she saw the "dagonfly" and shooed it away. Couldn't understand why I was taking a picture of a bug.

I thought that this was a weevil but found out that this was one of the many assassin bugs in Oklahoma.

Thanks to this one and a few friends the flower wasn't there the next day.

These are all female aphids as there are only males in the spring. The females give birth to their young which are born pregnant. To the left is an exoskeleton which may have been hers that she shed before giving birth to the smaller ones.

This was taken with a ring flash. She was very calm even though she was feeling heat from the flash. I was able to get several shots of her in my little friends album.

Took these especially for the creative challenge. Normally I stay away from these buggers but I took the risk. She was too busy making her nest anyway, to "bug" me. Check out the eggs she laid.

For some reason he kept coming back to this small metal rod in the flower bed. Gave me some good photo ops.

Bold Jumping Spider

I had stopped to enjoy the wildflowers. As I sat down to look at the first flower this apparition on the stem of a lupine caught my attention. First I thought it was a piece of bark, then a leg moved. I captured a couple frames before returning my attention to the spring flowers. Arriving home I took a closer look. The creature looked more like it should have been a dinosaur clambering through a Jurassic marsh, not something stealthily munching on lupine stocks. I wished I’d spent more time studying the modern day Tyrannosaurus.

What a happy little lady this must have been. Her leg pockets are stuffed with pollen an she even has some all over her body.

They give me the willies!!!!!

It's a big moth, that's for sure

I read that dragonflies obelisk (point the end of their bodies upward, toward the sun) in order to control the temperature of their bodies on hot days because it exposes less body surface to gather heat. Interesting little creatures - and lovely, too!

Wildflower was about 1" across and bug about 1/2".

It was very windy and this little guy was hanging on for dear life.

Fished him out of the pool. Was sitting on a dead leaf in the pool. My wife grabbed the leaf without noticing the June Bug which immediately flew into the water. I then fetched the bug for a picture.

Tucked carefully between the lettuce leaves was this morsel. He seemed to be enjoying the organic garden produce until being surprised by the cool water rinse. Without warning he sprang from the lettuce and fled to a dark corner in the kitchen.

Getting every last bit

Both carpenter and bumblebees obviously like Autumn sedum. There was only one carpenter bee --- but there were over a dozen bumblebees feeding in this bed.

Just look at the color and detail on this fellow --- painted by the Master painter Himself.

This so much resembles an insect I could not resist ..

A small but beautiful little butterfly visiting a poinsettia. Maybe someone can please assist with the name?

Grumbler: Wings with no shadow

Normally these "little" guys are so quick and agile that it is hard to capture some images of them. But this one must have just been recovering from a big dinner, and was sitting on a thistle long enough for a couple of close-ups. I am not 100% certain, but I think this could be an Aeshna eremita. If you are able to confirm or correct this, please let me know! Updated July 18, 2011: this appears to be an aeshna canadensis.
