Frozen Rose

To see the ice, best viewed full size. My days of many, many tea roses are long gone (thanks to the deer and cane borers) ... but I can still grow a mean shrub rose. At a certain point in the blossoms' evolution, they do look awfully pretty. One morning a few weeks ago while walking the dogs in the garden, I realized that everything was covered in frost. Ran inside, grabbed the new camera, crossed my fingers that I'd be able to work the new settings property and voila! A frozen rose!!! I hope you enjoy!!

Colchicum autumnale
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Plantae
Division: Magnoliophyta
Class: Liliopsida
Order: Liliales
Family: Colchicaceae
Genus: Colchicum
Species: C. autumnale
Binomial name
Colchicum autumnale
L.
Colchicum autumnale, commonly known as autumn crocus, meadow saffron or naked lady, is a flower which resembles the true crocuses, but flowering in autumn. (This is not a reliable distinction, however, since there are many true crocuses that flower in autumn.) The name "naked lady" comes from the fact that the flowers emerge from the ground long after the leaves have died back.
The plant has been mistaken by foragers for ramsons, which it vaguely resembles, but is a deadly poison due to the presence of colchicine, a useful drug with a narrow therapeutic index. The symptoms of colchicine poisoning resemble those of arsenic and there is no antidote. Despite its toxicity, colchicine is an approved treatment for gout and is also used in plant breeding to produce polyploid strains.

Clerodendron - Thanks Sante! :o)
published by: rodemicheli
Until 1937 the land now occupied by Winkworth Arboretum was a relatively neglected corner of a Surrey estate. The steep slopes on the west side of the valley were considered unfit for cultivation and left as natural woodland, together with a few patches of forestry plantation and sweet chestnut coppice. On the other side of the valley, beyond two fishing lakes, the gentler, rolling hills of the North Downs formed the skyline to the north and east, making it difficult to imagine that central London lay only 30 miles away
