The Face of Zeus
published by: lavender_dawn
After a hot 95 degree day. Thunderclouds rolled in for an evening light show. The storm lasted over 2 hours. A bolt of lightning can raise the temperature of the air by as much as 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit (27,700 degrees Celsius), and contain a hundred million electrical volts. I see a face...two eyes and lightning bolts from his nose.

Purification source, Shrine, Tokyo
published by: ttalbum
In Japanese Shinto shrines worshippers light and burn sticks of incense in large bundles and their purpose is to purify the surroundings. People, who are not familiar with Buddhist and Hindu religions, might understand this photo in a wrong way... (I remember my first reaction when I saw this symbol!) This is not the Nazi swastika! The Buddhist and Hindu swastikas look like mirror images of the Nazi symbol and symbolise peace, prosperity, good luck and love.

The tallest "tree trunk" stands about 7' off of the ground. We try again in late May, 2008!

Hot work by a hot grandson at Hosta Heaven
published by: lemme39
I know most people think of travel, vacations, fun, in summer, but to us summer means work. I tell Brady that I should be charging him for helping to create all those muscles. Of course, working out a couple hours every night after working here all day probably helps. thanks to all who have stopped by. Brady has worked hard on his body and is pretty proud of it. Of course he does have youth on his side also. He is not all brawn, as he graduated summa cum laude this past spring, not that Grandma is proud or anything. He also writes some wonderful music on the computer and guitar. If interested, check out http://www.myspace.com/starlightandsagai

A Lot of Power Old Faithful In Yellowstone National Park USA
published by: segseven
* Location: in Yellowstone National Park
Old Faithful is the world's most famous geyser. Situated in Yellowstone National Park's Upper Geyser Basin, it was given its name by members of the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition because of its predictable eruptions, every 60-90 minutes. Each eruption lasts 1.5-5 minutes, expelling some 3,700-8,400 gallons of boiling water (14,000-32,000 liters) in a narrow jet stream.

This One Looks Hot
published by: segseven
Hot springs are the most common hydrothermal features in the park. Their plumbing has no constrictions. Superheated water cools as it reaches the surface, sinks, and is replaced by hotter water from below. This circulation, called convection, prevents water from reaching the temperature needed to set off an eruption.

Something Hot...Balloon Festival, Provo, Utah
published by: trout921
The pilot actuates a burner by opening a propane valve, called a blast valve. The valve may be spring loaded so that it closes automatically, or it may stay open until closed by the pilot. The burner has a pilot light to ignite the propane and air mixture. The pilot light may be lit by the pilot with an external device, such as a flint striker or a lighter, or with a built-in piezo electric spark.[19]
A burner may have a secondary propane valve that releases propane more slowly and thereby generates a different sound. This is called a whisper burner and is used for flight over livestock to lessen the chance of spooking them. It also generates a more yellow flame and is used for night glows because it lights up the inside of the envelope better than the primary valve.
Burners can generate heat on the order of 30 million BTUs (31,651,677 kilojoule).

Paprika at Tihany, Hungary
published by: sgss_1965
Tihany is a village on the northern shore of Lake Balaton on the Tihany Peninsula (Hungary, Veszprem county). The whole peninsula is a historical district. Paprika is a spice made from the grinding of dried sweet red bell peppers (Capsicum annuum). In many European countries the name paprika also refers to bell peppers themselves. The seasoning is used in many cuisines to add colour and flavour to dishes. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word comes from the Hungarian "paprika", which derives from the Serbian "paprika", which means "the one that is hot" and it is derived from Serbian papar "pepper" which in turn was borrowed from the Latin "piper", for "pepper." Paprika is used as an ingredient in a broad variety of dishes throughout the world. Paprika (pimenton in Spain, colorau in Portugal, chiltoma in Nicaragua, but these "paprikas" are not made exclusively from bell peppers, other varieties are used, and there are several hot and sweet "paprikas") is principally used to season and colour rices, stews, and soups, such as goulash. In Spain, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Portugal, paprika is also used in the preparation of sausages as an ingredient that is mixed with meats and other spices. Paprika may be smoked for additional flavour. In India, a similar powdered spice comes from a fruit locally called 'deghi mirchi', which is grown widely and takes on a slightly different flavour depending on local soil and climatic conditions. The hottest paprikas are not the bright red ones, but rather the palest red and light brown coloured ones. Types of Hungarian paprika (Hungarian name in parentheses): Special Quality (Klonleges): The mildest and brightest red of all Hungarian paprikas, with excellent aroma. Delicate (Edes csemege): Ranging from light to dark red, a mild paprika with a rich flavour. Exquisite Delicate (Csemegepaprika): Similar to Delicate, but more pungent. Pungent Exquisite Delicate (Csipos Csemege, Pikans): A yet more pungent Delicate. Rose (Rozsa): Pale Red in colour with strong aroma and mild pungency. Noble Sweet (Edesnemes): The most commonly exported paprika; bright red and slightly pungent. Half-Sweet (Feledes): A blend of mild and pungent paprikas; medium pungency. Hot (Eros): Light brown in colour, this is the hottest of all the paprikas. In some languages, such as Dutch or German, the word "paprika" is used for the fruit, the bell pepper, of which the spice is made. (Source: Wikipedia)

Pop art sculpture 'LOVE' by Robert Indiana in front of Taipei 101, Taipei, March 2008
published by: sgss_1965
Robert Indiana (born Sept 13, 1928) is an American artist associated with the Pop Art movement. Indiana moved to New York City in 1954 and joined the pop art movement, using distinctive imagery drawing on commercial art approaches blended with existentialism, that gradually moved toward what Indiana calls "sculptural poems". Indiana's work often consists of bold, simple, iconic images, especially numbers and short words like "EAT", "HUG", and "LOVE". Indiana's best known image is the word love in upper-case letters, arranged in a square with a tilted letter O. This image, first created for a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art in 1964, was included on an eight-cent United States Postal Service postage stamp in 1973, the first of their regular series of "love stamps." (Source: Wikipedia) Taipei 101 is to be right.
