Italy, Rome - 2006 - The Pantheon with it's round central chapel and hole in the roof is the "Temple of all the gods". It is found in the Piazza della Rotonda. At night this fountain watches over the entrance to the temple.

My second outting with my new Cannon Rebel xti, I was so excited to try it out I must admit that I may have been speeding to get to the lake before sunrise, and I didn't even seem to notice it was only eight degrees out that morning. But it was well worth the trip.

Since this shot was taken a few days ago, little Gollum (Manx polydactyl) has fallen ill with what our vet suspects is cardiomyopathy, a serious heart condition. He's on a human cardiac drug and baby aspirin. Thanks for all the good wishes. He seems to be holding his own so far!

Sun sets behind a cemetary crucifix at Concordia Cemetary. I was very lucky to capture the clouds in this photo. El Paso is called the "Sun City" and clouds don't fill the skies to often.

Statue located in Concordia Cemetary. Concordia is a very unusal cemetary and very fascinating to photograph. There are approximately 65,000 headstones there. Many of whom are not physically there but have a headstone only. As El Paso grew, the town drunks were paid $5 to move each body from the old burial sites in town to Concordia. They figured it would be faster, easier & more profitable to move one (1) body & 5 headstones. Thus we still find human remains during any ground level construction in downtown.

My intention was to focus on the palm fronds but as it turns out, I prefer the soft focus on the fronds more than the sharp focus.

Better results with the HDR attempts today... they won't hold up under intense scrutiny, but the overall effect is good enough. Same technique used as yesterday; autobracketing on a gorilla-pod, this time with self-timer

Though there are some clear artifacts here, I found it worth to include in the collection due to the sun/fire effect

I Had No Idea What To Enter In This Week's Challenge..Then Light Created It For Me.

I generally use natural lighting - the late, warm afternoon sun is my favorite time to photograph.

While on a 4:00 AM black and white photo shoot of old buildings, my daughter takes a few moments to window shop.

Sunrise and flying geese are reflected from the gold plated windows of the home office of Midland National Life Insurance in downtown Sioux Falls.

This water and music show at Belagio, Las Vegas in very impressing. Caesar's Palace on the background looks nice, too.

This photo has not been altered in any way. The lighting was amazing. Very dark storm clouds all around and all of the sudden, as I was driving on the freeway, the sun dropped below the clouds and brightly illuminated a beautiful wetland area at the west end of the Gorge. The Cherry Blossom tree really stands out from all the other trees that have yet to bud this spring.

I like the game of the shadows in this photo. Once two shadows were here, then who knows where life will through them..

I took this because of the bees, but you can hardly see them. I do love what the camera did by overexposing or whatever to make the background black. It was taken in full sun, no playing with the color.

This is a play on lines, horizontal and vertical with crossing shadows on my wood deck. Taken with a 25 second exposure at F4. I placed the lights on the outside of the rail at each post.

I used the sun to light the flower from behind and through the flower. Similar to "Dafodil with sun behind flower 2", but with a little longer exposure. Picture is as it came from the camera.

I was taking train photographs in downtown Shreveport when I saw these huge movie floodlights outside of Shreveport's Scottish Rite. This photo was taken on a bright, sunny afternoon- yet the movie production lights are so bright that it makes everything away from the lights appear to be at night.

During the filming of the movie "The Great Debaters" in Mansfield, Louisiana, the production used huge balloons that light up the ground beneath the balloons. Late one night, I caught the shadow of an oak tree, backlit by one of the balloons.

The Port of San Francisco lies on the western edge of the San Francisco Bay at the Golden Gate. It has been called one of the three great natural harbors in the world, but it took two long centuries for navigators from Spain and England to find the anchorage originally called Yerba Buena. A port, as was said in its early days, in which all the fleets of the world could find anchorage. (Morphy) The larger waterfront area extends from the anchorage of the Golden Gate bridge through the Marina district all the way around the north and then east shore of the city of San Francisco to the city line beyond Candlestick Point. The Port of San Francisco is currently a semi-independent organization run by a five-member commission, appointed by the Mayor and approved by the Board of Supervisors.

I took a picture of a Figurine in a dark room with just a flashlight to catch the shadow behind. I then inverted the picture and found it a much more interesting picture.

Does anyone know what this creature is called?

Kodiak is one of the surviving sea otters rescued from the Exxon Valdez tragedy which occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska in 1989. He was taken to the Aquarium at Newport, Oregon where he has lived a very happy and full life.

Mammoth, CA - August 2007

When our ship was leaving Montenegro we encountered a double and triple rainbow in the Bay of Kotor. Elsewhere in my Montenegro album you can see the double rainbow. It was our captain's last cruise before retirement and he is from neighboring Croatia so as we passed this little island monastery its bells were rung and the ship blew its horn in repsonse as we circled the island. On the immediately adjacent shoreline is the town of Perast and the church in town also rang its bell in tribute. You can also see the town of Perast in my Montenegro album. It was just a lucky coincidence that the rainbow appeared amid this celebration, or perhaps that too was in tribute to the captain. :) Oddly enough, on the previous day in Albania, we also encountered a rainbow. I have never taken such good photos of rainbows and had the good fortune to see great rainbows on back to back days. Check my album on Albania to see the rainbow from a day earlier.

We had one of those perfectly clear days in late May while on vacation on a river boat traveling down the Rhine River. Taken with a polarizer, the word I always use to describe the light in this photo is dramatic. Thus, I immediately thought of this photo when this week's challenge was posted. I know we will see a number of natural light dramatic photos that depict a dark and stormy sky. Don't get me wrong, I like those images too, but I couldn't resist going for white clouds against a clear dark blue dramatic sky instead.

Usually when I take a picture of my cat, the pupil of his eyes turn red. In this case, when I used the flash, the pupil of his eyes looked like they were on fire.

I used a natural source of light, the sun, to capture this picture. My daughter had her First Communion on this day and the lighting was just right for the perfect picture.

Again, I used the sun as my lighting and it made this iris become a stunning photo.

As a pioneer family reaches it's destination, they kneel in prayer for having made it after crossing the plains from Illinois to what is now Salt Lake City, Utah. They traveled in a covered wagon, enduring weather, lack of water and food, sickness, and being attacked by indians or other scoundrels in 1840. This family struggled all of this and still have thier lives. They can now build a new home!

This was so unusual..It is actually storming, Rain coming down very hard, but the sun came through the clouds at the same time, making this tree in my yard appear like it is on fire! It was amazing to see...that is some cool lighting!!

Creative challenge light

I've had this crystal dolphin for nearly 20 years - a purchase from the Franklin Mint. I've always loved this piece for the way it refracts the light and the softness of it's form.

I've passed this little red shed many times on my visits to Cloverdale for both lacrosse games and curling tournaments. I kept telling myself that I'd have to stop and take a picture of it one day. Luckily, I had my camera with me on a day when the late afternoon sun brought out all it's charming qualities.

A circular sunbeam passes through the facade's Rosone (the rose window) of Orvieto stunning Cathedral (Duomo) creating this spectacular light effect on Ugolino di Prete Ilario's frescoes depicting the life of the Virgin (1357-1363). Broad sunlight on the birth of the Virgin and shadow on the death of Christ! I found it thrilling! Enjoy the frescoes details at full size!

A nice and relaxed atmosphere on Baveno lakeshore promenade. It looks like Lady Moon has stolen the light from the lamp to shine even brighter over the lake in this summernight scene! At fullsize you can see the Isola Bella framed between the iron railings.

This Paper Kite Butterfly was enjoying a treat from the yellow flowers of the very tall bush. The glass windows from the ceiling of the Butterfly House are causing the blue light from the outside sky to show through the white spots of the butterfly. This was taken in SW Florida. In the spring of 2007 a fire in South Georgia caused smoke to cover the sun over 300 miles away in Lee county Florida. For several days the sky and color of everything outside was strange.

These tiny seeds waft about on the wind, and we chase them about, tramping and running, 'til we chance upon one, trapped by a branch or blade of grass....delicate, silky, like a woman's cheek.

This is Tilly, our Abysinnian cat who would follow the light of the sun from the back of the house to the front until it finally set. I am sure she suffered from Seasonal Affective Disorder in the short days of winter. Light is important not just for our photography but also for our state of mind. Don't you just feel so much better when the sun is shining brightly.

This is the Rainbow Bridge joining Niagara Falls, Canada to Niagara Falls, New York. The reason it was so named is self-expanatory:>) The amazing thing is that when there is sunlight there is a rainbow. So when you go to Niagara Falls you will not be disappointed, you will find your rainbow.

This picture was shot from the dock at Baddeck, Nova Scotia, looking down into about what I think was about 6 feet of water. The area was full of jelly fish, but on the other side of the dock kids were swimming anyway.

The Glienicke bridge is a bridge in Berlin which spans the Havel River to connect the cities of Berlin and Potsdam. The Soviet Union and the United States used it three times to exchange captured spies during the Cold War, and the Bridge was referred to as the Bridge of Spies by reporters. The first prisoner exchange between the superpowers took place on February 10, 1962. The U.S. released noted Russian spy Colonel Rudolf Ivanovich Abel in exchange for pilot Francis Gary Powers captured by the USSR following the U-2 Crisis of 1960. Annette von Broecker claims that a lucky guess resulted in her being the only eyewitness to this exchange. The second exchange on June 12, 1985 was a hurriedly arranged swap of 23 American agents held in Eastern Europe for four Soviet agents arrested in the West. The final exchange was also the most public. On February 11, 1986 the human rights campaigner and political prisoner Anatoly Sharansky and three Western agents were exchanged for Karl Koecher and four other Eastern agents. The Glienicke bridge as a venue for prisoner exchange has also appeared in fiction, most notably in the 1966 Harry Palmer film, Funeral in Berlin, starring Michael Caine, based on the novel of the same name. this is speed vagon at Zurich aeroport. it takes you under ground, from the one side of aeroport ground to the another side where is building, in i think just a minute. Interesting is the female Robotic voice, wich is leading you trought that voyage.i love this sight! and i am allways looking forward to experience it again, and again:)

The lighting in the background makes the Blackbirds stand out above the tall grasses also highlighted from the amber glow of the Sunset.

Oh, what a Heavenly feeling I experienced taking this Photo. The Lake is only about 1 1/4 mile north/west from us,lots of wildlife there.The Lake is fed from the Mokelumne River which runs on the outskirts of our Town.

Our Town of 65,000 inhabitants,surrounded by Vineyards here in the Northern San Joaquin Valley,just at the base of the Foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and just East of the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta Region makes it an ideal area for Grapes and being the Zinfandel Capitol of the world,I thought it to be appropriate to enter a glass of Red Wine...Cheers my friends!!:-)

The skulpture stands 9m tall and is located in Esbjerg, Denmark by the sea...Many wifes have been standing like that, overlooking the sea, hoping there husbands came home safely.

Who wouldn't love a dream with this destination? This acrylic cube with laser picture inside is bottom lighted by LED lights and nestled next to a cut glass vase. The result sparks fantasies for the child in me.

Picture of our yard after the December, 2007 ice storm. Back lighting by the street lights adds a strangely friendly warmth. If you look closely by using the 'full size' option, you can see snowflake patterns in the large white flakes coming down.

This photo is a blend of two photos. The bright sunset is from a shot I took at Dana Point Beach in S. Ca. I merged it with a photo that I took on the coast of Monterey, Ca.

I captured this photo when the fires were raging in S. California last year. I did not add color to this picture as the sunset and the firey sky made the scenery this golden color.

This is one of my favorites.

This was taken at the top of the Great Falls in Paterson. it was the middle of March and although it was bright and sunny, it was still cold. This mist from the thundering falls caused this beautiful mist to appear in the sunlight, and it was freezing on the ground. I was very pleased to capture the unreal quality of the surroundings at the top of the falls in this shot.

1/8th shutter was as low as this hand was prepared to go so as not to disturb those around me in deep connection with ....enlightenment.

This tower is used in the summer for spoting fires in the surrounding pine-tree forest.
