Grieving mother and Motherland sculptures, Mamaev kurgan, volgograd, russia

Two Mothers are here! The Motherland Calls is a statue in Volgograd, Russia commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad. When the memorial was dedicated in 1967 it was the tallest sculpture in the world, measuring 85 meters (279 feet) from the tip of its sword to the top of the plinth. The figure itself measures 52 meters (6 meter higher than Statue of Liberty) and the sword 33 meters. In the front you can see the composition of grieving mother with the died soldier on hands. Its person is covered by a fighting banner - a symbol of last military honors.

No, this isn't another friend of mine. This was taken on the Safari in Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World. To share a funny, short story. I did this to my mother once (yes, on the bottom) when she was bending over getting something out of the oven (I was 2 years old, okay!), and she bit me back! I never bit her again!

After my Dog CHI-CHI gave birth to her two Pups, you could see right away the different personalties in each, Gizmo the puppy in this pic needed her to cuddle with him all the time, he would put his little head near her face and cuddle for as long as his Mom would let him...she was such a good Mom as you can see.

This was taken in 2001 with a long defunct point-and-shoot. I applied a watercolor filter to hide the unavoidable limitations of the original. The mare was a reg. Welsh pony and Bittersweet Brandi, her newborn filly, was sired by my former Polish Arab stallion (deceased). Brandi is now a child's show pony living in Wolfville, NS.

This is a shot of Shannon [my oldest daughter who is now 23 and is autistic] when she was 5 years old. She loved and still loves the ocean - I love this photo because it shows her unbridled joy and exuberance over the waves and the water. Being her mother has not always been happy or easy, I can not lie. I of course never expected when I carried that baby and she was born that she would have the difficulties in life that she has had. But she has such excitement and joy which is so over the top for those things she loves, as seen here. She has helped me see the world through her eyes - to taste, feel, hear and experience things to the fullest. Thank you God for my dear daughter Shannon, and thank you Shannon, for being my child.

This was taken in Middletown, Rhode Island on Second Beach at sunset this past summer on our vacation. I see this photo and identify with that mom standing there with her daughter - soaking in the ocean, the warmth and the beautiful sunset at the end of a busy day. It reminds me to take the time to enjoy the beauty - to smell the roses. At the end of the day and at the end of my life, I want to know I presented a beautiful world to my daughters, that I introduced them to history, art, music, adventure and love, that I opened those doors for them and the world did not pass them by.

Jizo statues can be found all over Japan. It is believed that Jizo saves the souls of those in Hell, especially aborted, miscarried and stillborn babies. According to Japanese belief, children who die prematurely are sent to Hell because they have brought so much sadness to their parents. Most Jizo wear red bibs or hats made by mothers who hope that by offering them to Jizo, they can encourage him to take special care of their children's spirits. Occasionally, clothes are presented in thanks for illnesses believed to have been healed through the intervention of Jizo.

The Great Rift Valley, mostly known in Kenya as the East African Rift Valley, was formed between 2 and 7 million years ago. It is the longest rift on the surface of the earth. The Rift Valley starts all the way from Jordan, Middle East, and runs through Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Congo, Malawi, and ends near the coastal town of Solada in Mozambique. The amazing attribute about the Rift Valley is that once it reaches the Kenyan border, it diverges into two rifts, which later converge near Lake Rukwa in southern Tanzania
