Spasskaya Tower clock, Moscow, Russia
published by: russpsych
That is a place which we can call "The Heart of Russia" - The Red Square and Spasskaya Tower with the Main Clock of Russia. The Spasskaya Tower was built in 1491 by an Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solari. The tower's name comes from the icon of Spas Nerukotvorny (Divine Savior), which was placed above the gates in 1658. The Spasskaya Tower was the first one to be crowned with the hipped roof in 1624-1625. The clock on the Spasskaya Tower appeared between 1491 and 1585. It is usually referred to as the Kremlin clock (Kremlin Kurants).

Magic Number Arrangements
published by: jade_ca
This hand-knitting version of what the Chinese call a '10,000 Year Calender' is fascinating. The top row contains seven Chinese characters (from left to right): Sunday, Monday,... and the last one is Saturday. In the rows below, numbers are arranged to make the calender flexible enough to fit for any known year/month combination. Here is how it works: you only need to slide the top row left or right to match the day with the first date of the month. The rest will be taken care of by the magic arrangement of the numbers (note that the left and right boarder of the calender block is defined by the left and right positions of the top row).
This shot was taken in September, 2006. Therefore the position of the top row was adjusted to match that month. Coincidentally this position is also a fit for the current month, i.e., February, 2008!
Try adjusting the top row to match a month/year combination that is of interest to you. See how the magic numbers work out!

ONE
published by: loriarnold101
I HAVE 3 ENTRIES FOR THE NUMBERS CHALLENGE..ALL ARE THE ONE DOLLAR BILL OF THE UNITED STATES CURRENCY. The ONE-DOLLAR bill has a great history! It has had the exact same design since 1957. It's materials are made from cotton and linen. It has red and blue silk fibers running through it to keep it from falling apart. On the front of the bill, you can see scales for a balanced budget. In the center you have a carpenter's square, a tool used for an even cut. Underneath is the key to the United States Treasury. It is mostly the backside of the ONE-DOLLAR bill that is most interesting. On the backside, you see 2 circles. Both circles, together, comprise the Great Seal of the United States. The 1st Continental Congress requested that Benjamin Franklin and a group of men come up with a seal. It took them 4 years to accomplish this task and another two years to get it approved. If you look at the left-hand circle, you will see a pyramid. (Go to next photo in the challenge)

EAGLE
published by: loriarnold101
My 3rd entry is the 2nd circle on the backside of the ONE-Dollar bill. If you look at it carefully, you will learn that it is on every National Cemetery in the United States. It is also on the Parade of Flags Walkway at the Bushnell, Florida National Cemetery, and is the centerpiece of most hero's monuments. Slightly modified, it is the seal of the President of the United States, and it is always visible whenever he speaks, yet very few people know what the symbols mean. The bald eagle was selected as a symbol for victory for two reasons.1st he is not afraid of a storm, he is strong, and he is smart enough to soar above it. 2nd, he wears no material crown. We had just broken from the King of England. Also, notice the shield is unsupported. This country can now stand on it's own. At the top of the shield you have a white bar signifying congress, a unifying factor. We were coming together as a nation. In the eagle's beak you will read, 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' meaning 'One nation from many people' Above the eagle, you have 13 stars representing the 13 original colonies, and any clouds of misunderstanding rolling away. Notice what the eagle holds in his talons. He holds an olive branch and arrows. This country wants peace, but we will never be afraid to to fight to preserve peace. The eagle always wants to face the olive branch, but in time of war, his gaze turns toward the arrows. THey say 13 is an unlucky number. This is a worldwide belief. But in the case of the ONE-DOLLAR bill, ....*13original colonies * 13 signers of the declaration of independence * 13 stripes on our flag * *13 steps on the pyramid * 13 letters in the latin above the eagle * 13 letters in 'E PlURIBUS UNUM' * 13 stars above the eagle, * 13 bars on that shield * 13 leaves on the olive branch * 13 fruits * 13 arrows * and for minorities, the 13th ammendment. So my 3 entries are for the ONE-DOLLAR BILL. Now you know the meaning of the symbols on the ONE DOllAR currency of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

PYRAMID ON ONE DOLLAR BILL
published by: loriarnold101
Notice the face is lighted, and the western side is dark. This country was just beginning. We had not begun to explore the west or decided what we could do for Western Civilization. The pyramid is uncapped, again signifying that we were not even close to being finished. Inside the capstone you have the all-seeing eye, and ancient symbol for divinity. It was Franklin's belief that one man couldn't do it alone, but a group of men, with the help of GOd, could do anything. IN GOD WE TRUST is on this one dollar bill currency. THe latin above the pyramid, ANNUIT COEPTIS, means 'God has favored our undertaking' The latin below the pyramid, NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM, means 'A new order has begun' At the base of the pyramid is the Roman Numeral for 1776.(MDCCLXXVI) Go to 3rd entry.

Are you a superstitious person?
published by: ttalbum
Thirteen is regarded as an unlucky number in many cultures. Fear of the number 13 is called triskaidekaphobia. In Christianity some people believe that this double-digit represents Judas, who was the guest at the Last Supper who betrayed Jesus. As a result of this there is a superstition that should thirteen sit at a table to dine, one will die in the next year. According to another interpretation, the number 13 is unlucky because of how the ancients viewed the phases of the moon. Normally there would be 12 cycles of the moon during the year, but there would be years where there were 13 phases of the moon. The 13th moon was considered foreign and symbolic of things not normal. Couples avoid getting married on this date, many buildings (hotels in particular) don't have floor 13, some airplanes skip a row 13, some streets don't contain a house number 13 and even F1 race drivers avoid this number.... People in Porto Fino, Italy don't seem to have fear of the unlucky number. One of the streets had three house with number 13!

Caught Between The Numbers
published by: barbara2258
Jumping spiders are usually less than 2 cm (less than 0.8 in) in length with females generally larger than males. They are among the most ornate of spiders; many species are brightly colored and strikingly patterned, with stout bodies, short legs, and a very large pair of eyes on the front of the face. The jumping spider has four pairs of eyes, with the large principal eyes giving it sharper vision than any other animal of similar size. It can identify prey, predators, and mates from up to 30 cm (up to 12 in) away.

Numbers are fun!!
published by: hjaynefoster
This is a song we sing with our little ones in school - Numbers are all around us, they're everywhere we go. You count them on your fingers, you count them on your toes AND when the number grows, you count them with your nose!! They love to sing it and as a result they now have a real 'interest' in numbers... Gaining their enthusiasm at an early age is so very important. Learning nowadays is so much more fun for children.

Field of blooming sunflowers, Altay, Xinjiang, August 2005
published by: sgss_1965
Most flowerheads on a field of blooming sunflowers are turned towards the east, where the sun rises each morning. Immature sunflowers in the bud stage exhibit heliotropism and on sunny days track the sun on its journey along the sky from east to west, while at night or at dawn they return to its eastward orientation. The stem of the flower can grow up to 3m tall, with the flower head reaching 30cm in diameter. (Source: Wikipedia).

The doppa, a square or round skullcap originating in the Caucasus and worn by Kazan Tatars, Uzbeks and Uyghurs, is a Muslim skullcap, similar to the Jewish kippah. The doppa is derived from a Turkic, more pointed, ancestral cap, which can be seen in some of the portraits of Jalaleddin Mingburnu. It is possible that the doppa had influence on the development of the kippa when Jewish communities interacted with Muslim Turks in Central Asia. (Source: Wikipedia). The doppa can be folded flat (see upper left) for ease of carrying.

One of the famous BVLGAR clocks for sale in the Tower gift shop. Around 1978, American born designer Walter Gluck who had changed his name to ViktorIV/Bulgar became enthusiastically involved with clocks. He thought that it was time to end the age-old way in which we indicate and read the time from our clocks and watches. It started with the face of a clock in a bar, from which he had removed the 6 and regularly divided the other numbers, so that at first sight everything seemed normal. But visitors of the café who had a few drinks after work became strangely confused when it came to establishing the time to go home. Viktor called his new activity Bulgar Time. The next step was to design (in 1980) a clock where the hands turned in the opposite direction. Clockfaces emerged in rapid succession, the 6 reappeared, but the clockface was, for example, turned 180 degrees, so that the 6 appeared at the top and the 12 at the bottom. In September 1981, after many trips to Switzerland, the first prototype of the first Bulgar Time Swiss Quartz wristwatch was manufactured. A long series of different models, including watches running at double or triple speed even, was to appear over the years. First they were sold by Viktor himself, but finally (in 1986, shortly before his death), the four models he considered as definitive were put on the market by Art Expo, Odense, Denmark, in a limited edition, in a black box with accompanying book.

Facing the west end of the cathedral is the Gustavianum, built in 1625 to be the main building of the University, and served as such through most of the 19th century. It contains the Museum of Nordic Antiquities, the Victoria Museum (of Egyptian antiquities) and the University's cultural history collections. It also houses a perfectly preserved 17th-century Anatomical Theatre (used in its time for public dissections). The cupola on top of the Gustavianum is a landmark in Uppsala and is crowned by a working sundial.

The Shepherd Gate Clock is mounted in the wall outside the Greenwich Observatory. It was the first clock to show Greenwich Mean Time to the public. It is a slave clock that keeps time by recieving electric (galvano-magnetic, as it was then called) pulses from a master clock in the Observatory. It has a twenty-four hour analogue dial with Roman Numerals and the addition of a zero (Romans did not use Zero)to mark midnight. With the coming of the railway, Sir George Airy wanted to standardise the many local times that were in use in the country at the time. In 1849, Charles Shepherd of 53 Leadenhall Street, London, had patented a system for controlling a network of Master and slave clocks using electricity. He had installed the Master, Slave Clocks and Time Ball at Greenwich by August 1852. The Slaves here worked with pulses received every second. Pulses were also sent to another Master at London Bridge which then passed them on at a lesser frequency to clocks all around the country. By 1866, time signals were being sent to Harvard University, USA, via transatlantic cable.

3 series de numeros, 3 series of numbers
published by: amateurpicture
Western people are very use to Arabic and Roman numbers but those aren't the only ones, Can you mach each Chinese number with its Arabic/Roman pair?
Roman numerals came originally from Etruscan numerals, but they changed the symbols. The Roman system came into use from the 4th century BC, but the symbols we know today were not fixed until about the 1st century AD.
About 100 BC the Indian digits reach Europe in Arabic manuscripts, becoming known as Arabic numerals. But several more centuries must pass before the ten Arabic numerals gradually replace the system inherited in Europe from the Roman Empire.

Every character in the Braille code is based on an arrangement of one to six raised dots. Each dot has a numbered position in the Braille cell. These characters make up the letters of the alphabet, punctuation marks, numbers, and everything else you can do in print.
Braille numbers are made using the first ten letters of the alphabet, "a" through "j", and a special number sign which I've represented as white dots.
The ten first letters of the alphabet have been represented as coloured dots. I followed the same pattern than before so it's easy to recognise the number.

THE AGGREGATE MAKE THE POWER!
published by: tonymatso
Bulgaria was founded in 681 by khan Asparuh. In 1018 the country was conquered by Byzantines. During the reign of tsar Simeon I Bulgaria became one of the most powerful countries in Europe extending on three seas: the Egean Sea, the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea. After 167 years of domination, the brothers Asen and Petar created the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. Our country was extended on three seas again during the reign of tsar Ivan Asen II. In 1396 Bulgaria fell under Ottoman domination for 5 centuries till 1878, when Bulgaria was liberated with the help of the Russian army and Third Bulgarian country was found. Till 1946 the country was a monarchy.

This is a shot of the New Mexico State Aggies in their season opener this year. The picture is not a composite, but has been processed to look like a Dave Hill shot, with the extreme contrasty look. This is similiar to HDR, but doesn't strive to have the levels blend.

Numbers 1 - Remember when?
published by: police370
The good old days when gas was a little bit (maybe a whole lot) cheaper. Today average is about 3.15 in town. They even had full service where they pumped the gas for you, Checked your oil, and cleaned your windows for this price. Needless to say, this station went out of business a few years ago and the sign is still there today in Ellijay, GA.

Remember when the numbers were on a rotary dial and calls cost a dime. I used to fix these back in the 60's. Found in downtown Ellijay in Trevor's General Store still in the old phone booth. And, yes it has dialtone.

Ali'iolani Hale (House of the Heavenly Kings)
published by: clarkth
Stanford Dole, backed by other prominent sugar planters, proclaimed the overthrow of the Hawai'ian monarchy and establishment of a provisional government on the steps of this building on January 17, 1893. The clock hasn't worked in years because it is old and broken. The parts to fix it are evidently no longer manufactured. Time stands still for both this long exposure shot and for the Hawai'ian people.
