published by: filmlaw1
I was struck by the seeming incongruity of these red containers opposite a dock where my ship was tied up. I don't know who owned them or why they were there. In many countries, unattended containers like these would be cause for alarm. I was comforted by the fact that there were uniformed police officers snacking on donuts and coffee in a motor vehicle about 25 yards behind me. I thought the juxtaposition of the red containers, the blue sky and the distant hills encased in a low hanging mist was too interesting to pass up.

14th Century Croatia pharmacy 2206
published by: filmlaw1
This is the oldest known pharmacy in Europe. It can be found fully assembled as depicted in a museum in Dubrovnik. I learned after I took this photo that photographs in this part of the museum were frowned upon. I saw no sign but nevertheless felt momentarily guilty until I discovered how nicely this image turned out.

A uma tonalidade muito escurecida é comumente usada nos períodos de luto.

Penelope loves...
published by: minikittycat
Valentine's Day! Every year she puts on her cute red heart earrings...her red negligee...she lights a candle to set the mood...candy...flowers...And then she waits...and waits...for her true love...and waits...Is this the year that Penelope will find true love? Or is this the year that Penelope is going to realize that Valentine's Day is one big retail hoax and drink herself down to the bottom of a bottle of RED wine...

MARTENITSA
published by: tonymm64912
March 1st is probably our most intrinsic holiday because it is unique to Bulgaria. The custom of wearing martenitsas (red-and-white threads worn as a decoration) is only popular in Bulgaria and it is perhaps the most positive one in all our folklore. The traditions related to March 1st as well as the martenitsas themselves are associated with optimism and anticipation of warmer weather, fertility and well-being. This tradition is based upon the founding of Bulgaria in 681 AD and there are many more than one folk-legend about the origin of this celebrated day.

AMARYLLIS....
published by: umpa1
Of all flowering bulbs, amaryllis are the easiest to bring to bloom. This can be accomplished indoors or out, and over an extended period of time. The amaryllis originated in South America's tropical regions and has the botanical name Hippeastrum. The large flowers and ease with which they can be brought to bloom make amaryllis popular and in demand worldwide. The amaryllis comes in many beautiful varieties including various shades of red, white, pink, salmon and orange. There are also many striped and multicolored varieties, usually combining shades of pink or red with white.

Middle of nowhere/
Finally you can breathe/
Nobody knows your name/

Shut your eyes tightly/

Gently expose what's underneath/
And all you feel now/
Is the scarlet in your day/
Even if it's real/
You can't stay.../

Scarlet Macaw ~ Ara Macao ~ Maui Hawai'i
published by: ourjrny
Easily distinguished from amazons and cockatoos by their bare facial patch and long pointed tail, the Macaw family comprises one of the most extravagantly coloured in the bird world. There are several variations of the Scarlet, most notably an uncommon variety with emerald green on the wing along with the yellow, and the more common wide patch of yellow. Their declining populations in the wild continues to cause great concern for tropical environmentalists. They are flamboyant, colourful, and captivating birds. Their personalities are legendary. Because of their great beauty and engaging personalities, they have been kept in captivity for centuries. In fact, in the United States, they were kept by the Pueblo Indians since 1100 A.D. where they prized the Scarlet Macaw. This is one of Bud Clifton's beautiful showbirds, 'The Maui Bird Man' ~ http://www.maui.net/~mauibud/meetbud.html ~ http://www.maui.net/~mauibud/conv-intro.html ~ http://www.mauigardenofeden.com/ ~

Red flowers in the grass
published by: makoni57
In the sommertime you bring a blanket, a pot of coffee and take your sweetheart by the hand. Find a field with flowers and corn. Walk carefully and find a nice spot to sit. Drink your coffee and listen to the larks above. Then lie down and smell the flowers around you while you're watching the drifting skyes. I think, it is super-romantic that my husband and I still after more than 30 years can enjoy moments like this.

I have gotten numerous responses to this renovation of Mt Rainier. I can't take full credit for this work of art. My niece, Bonnie, etched this on the Etch-a-Sketch as she was riding a bus in Seattle across town while I was visiting Seattle. She is a very talented girl to say the least. I for one am very proud of her. Thanks for all your responses...I forward them all to her and her mother (my sis).

The book is "Love in Time of Cholera" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez about a fifty-year love triangle between Fermina, Florentino and Doctor Urbino. Three Chinese tourists in dark business suit and their guide at Berlin Wall, Germany
published by: sgss_1965
The Berlin Wall was a barrier separating West Berlin from East Berlin and the rest of East Germany. An iconic symbol of the Cold War, the wall divided East and West Berlin for 28 years, from the day construction began on August 13, 1961 until it was dismantled in 1989. During this period 125 people were killed trying to escape to the West, according to official figures. However, a prominent victims' group claims that at least 1,245 people had been killed trying to flee East Germany. Newly discovered documents confirm that the Communist regime gave explicit orders to shoot and kill attempted defectors, including children. The East German government had always denied having such a policy. When the East German government announced on November 9, 1989, after several weeks of civil unrest, that entering West Berlin would be permitted, crowds of East Germans climbed onto and crossed the wall, joined by West Germans on the other side in a celebratory atmosphere. Over the next few weeks, parts of the wall were chipped away by a euphoric public and by souvenir hunters; industrial equipment was later used to remove the rest of it. The fall of the Berlin wall paved the way for German reunification, which was formally concluded on October 3, 1990. (Source: Wikipedia)

From Russia with love
published by: lnayvelt
Khokhloma or Khokhlomskaya rospis' is the name of a Russian wood painting handicraft.
The handcraft was named after a trade settlement Khokhloma in the same area, where craftsmen had been known for making and selling their handmade goods between the 18th and early 20th centuries.
An original technique of painting wood in a goldish color without applicating real gold is typical for the Khokhloma. Articles carved out of wood (tableware, mostly) were usually primed with clay mortar, raw linseed oil and tin powder (nowadays, aluminum). A floral pattern was then painted on top of this coating with a brush. After that, the articles were coated with linseed oil (nowadays, synthetic oil) and hardened in a kiln at high temperatures. A combination of red, black and goldish colors is typical for the Khokhloma. There are two principal wood painting techniques used in the Khokhloma, such as the so-called "superficial technique" (red and black colors over the goldish one) and the "background technique" (a goldish silhouette-like design over the colored background).

sunset Monserrate.Sintra
published by: terezadelpilar
The Monserrate Palace is a palace located near Sintra, Portugal. It was built in 1858 and is a fine example of the Sintra Romanticism. The designer of this suggestive little romantic palace was James Knowles Jr. and it was built in 1858 on the initiative of Francis Cook, Viscount Monserrate, being one of the most interesting examples of Sintra Romanticism. A work in the Romantic-Orientalist spirit, with its great circular tower, bulbous cupolas and exotic decoration.

Red Rose Tears
published by: busterrr19_
one of the beauties in my garden,
I bought the rose from Jackson & Perkins, all my roses are except my Hot Cocoa, every year J&P has what they call test panel roses, they send u 4 roses all different at a discounted price, they do not have names though, closest rose I see to this one seems to be the new Veteran's Honor Rose, It really looks a lot like this one, all the blooms on this bush aren't as fluted as this one, that is one reason I took this photo, is that it was such a perfect bloom, but they are all slightly fluted.
