"La Fortaleza" with Christmas decorations in Old San Juan. La Fortaleza, also known as Palacio de Santa Catalina, was the first fort contructed by Spain to protect the city of San Juan in Puerto Rico. Construction started in 1533 and ended in 1540. In 1822 Spain designated La Fortaleza as the official residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico. In 1983, UNESCO designated La Fortaleza as World Heritage Cultural Site (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/266). Today, the "Palacio de Santa Catalina" still is the living quarters of the Governor of Puerto Rico. It's considered the oldest state house in the Americas.

Temple elephant, Trichy
published by: ttalbum
It has to be mentioned that I nearly burnt my feet trying to take this photo. People are supposed to take off their shoes entering Hindu temples so, of course, I took off my shoes. As I was entering the temple I saw this elephant heading outside. I really wanted to take a picture of such exotic scene but for that I had to get a good bit in front of the elephant to get a good view but the ground was so hot to stand on. I was so determined to capture this moment that, no matter how painful it was, I did get to the good viewing point with no shoes on and after the job was done I had to sprint back because it was simply unbearable to keep my feet on the ground for more than a second! I had to work hard for this one!

slant
published by: kelvinnz
Dunedin is a city built on hills. Streets are steep and architecture is built to accommodate the slant. You know a street is really steep when the sidewalk is replaced by steps and when the tar seal is replaced by concrete to stop the road surface flowing downhill on sunny days.

Seems appropriate for this busy Street Scene near the Market in Adelaide,South Australia. A rainbow of colours in the puddle. The little girl extreme right of shot is who I was watching as she skipped along but as she moved further away I noticed the busy shoppers, their colourful shopping trollies and carry bags all reflected in the large puddle.Start from the right of shot.. Sing with me.. "I can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow too. Red and yellow and green and blue, orange and purple and ..it seems to fit the song. (A very popular song at our Kindergarten).

While walking along a street in Effesis, I came upon this business establishment that was sorely in need of renovation. I looked around for a sign saying when it was scheduled to reopen. Having found not I pocketed my wallet and left.

my daily walk
published by: wafox100
This is a portions of the area where I go for my daily walk. The Monastary is home to a Frence Order of elderly nuns. The park I am standing in is complete with flowers & trees (in season) and has a stream with a foot bridge. The surrounding woods contain Deer, and a wide variety of wild animal life. In addition the Long Island Sound is nearby.

china6

Despite the fact that the majority of California's private property owners refused to sell or deed their land to Chinese, there were areas where many Chinese in Northern California living outside of San Francisco Chinatown, could maintain small communities or even individual business, but except for Oakland, they did not set up any special town with shopping and restaurants. Nonetheless, the historic rights of property owners to deed or sell their property to whom was exercised in sufficient numbers to keep the Chinese community from spreading outside of its early development. However, the Supreme Court ruled it was unconstitutional for property owners to deed their rights so that certain groups were excluded. These rulings allowed the enlargement of Chinatown and an increase of the Chinese population of the city. At the same time, the declining white population of the city as a result of White Flight combined to change the demographics of the city. Neighborhoods that were once predominately white, such as Richmond District and Sunset District and in other suburbs across the San Francisco Bay Area became centers of new Chinese immigrant communities. This included new immigrant groups such as Mandarin-speaking immigrants from Taiwan who have tended to settled in suburban Millbrae, Cupertino, Milpitas, and Mountain View – avoiding San Francisco as well as Oakland entirely. This suburbanization continues today.
