"La Fortaleza" with Christmas decorations in Old San Juan. La Fortaleza, also known as Palacio de Santa Catalina, was the first fort contructed by Spain to protect the city of San Juan in Puerto Rico. Construction started in 1533 and ended in 1540. In 1822 Spain designated La Fortaleza as the official residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico. In 1983, UNESCO designated La Fortaleza as World Heritage Cultural Site (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/266). Today, the "Palacio de Santa Catalina" still is the living quarters of the Governor of Puerto Rico. It's considered the oldest state house in the Americas.

Temple elephant, Trichy
published by: ttalbum
It has to be mentioned that I nearly burnt my feet trying to take this photo. People are supposed to take off their shoes entering Hindu temples so, of course, I took off my shoes. As I was entering the temple I saw this elephant heading outside. I really wanted to take a picture of such exotic scene but for that I had to get a good bit in front of the elephant to get a good view but the ground was so hot to stand on. I was so determined to capture this moment that, no matter how painful it was, I did get to the good viewing point with no shoes on and after the job was done I had to sprint back because it was simply unbearable to keep my feet on the ground for more than a second! I had to work hard for this one!

slant
published by: kelvinnz
Dunedin is a city built on hills. Streets are steep and architecture is built to accommodate the slant. You know a street is really steep when the sidewalk is replaced by steps and when the tar seal is replaced by concrete to stop the road surface flowing downhill on sunny days.

Seems appropriate for this busy Street Scene near the Market in Adelaide,South Australia. A rainbow of colours in the puddle. The little girl extreme right of shot is who I was watching as she skipped along but as she moved further away I noticed the busy shoppers, their colourful shopping trollies and carry bags all reflected in the large puddle.Start from the right of shot.. Sing with me.. "I can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow too. Red and yellow and green and blue, orange and purple and ..it seems to fit the song. (A very popular song at our Kindergarten).

china6
published by: mcnabb22
Despite the fact that the majority of California's private property owners refused to sell or deed their land to Chinese, there were areas where many Chinese in Northern California living outside of San Francisco Chinatown, could maintain small communities or even individual business, but except for Oakland, they did not set up any special town with shopping and restaurants. Nonetheless, the historic rights of property owners to deed or sell their property to whom was exercised in sufficient numbers to keep the Chinese community from spreading outside of its early development. However, the Supreme Court ruled it was unconstitutional for property owners to deed their rights so that certain groups were excluded. These rulings allowed the enlargement of Chinatown and an increase of the Chinese population of the city. At the same time, the declining white population of the city as a result of White Flight combined to change the demographics of the city. Neighborhoods that were once predominately white, such as Richmond District and Sunset District and in other suburbs across the San Francisco Bay Area became centers of new Chinese immigrant communities. This included new immigrant groups such as Mandarin-speaking immigrants from Taiwan who have tended to settled in suburban Millbrae, Cupertino, Milpitas, and Mountain View – avoiding San Francisco as well as Oakland entirely. This suburbanization continues today.

This photo was taken in Chinatown, Singapore. The face expressions of those lady customers was what attracted me to take this picture. There has not been any westerner setting up business in this area before. Perhaps they were suprised and curious to see one like this in a place where they are so familar for decades.

Chester Cross
published by: annedm1
The Cross stands at the heart of Chester (on the left of the picture)where Bridge, Northgate, Watergate and Eastgate Streets meet, and is an obvious meeting point. It was carved from local sandstone in the 15th century and was badly vandalised during the English Civil War in the 17th century. The Town Crier greets visitors here and religious preachers use the area to express their beliefs. If you are wondering where the actual cross is, study the ball that sits atop the monument! This part of the city also boasts the best view of the rows.

Cody Wyoming
published by: annedm1
Old Trail Town is located in Cody, Wyoming--gateway to Yellowstone Park's East entrance. Cody is in the heart of the "American West." For example, a short distance north of Cody you could take the turnoff and drive the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway through Wyoming's spectacular Sunlight Basin on the way to Cooke City, Montana, and the northeast entrance to Yellowstone Park. The Sunlight Basin is located in the midst of the majestic peaks of the Absaroka Mountains with cuthroat trout steams beckoning at every turn. Or, instead of taking the turn to historic Cooke City, you could take the turn to historic Red Lodge, Montana, and drive over the remarkable Beartooth Pass and Beartooth Mountains. During your stay in Cody, you'll enjoy shopping, vacationing at one of the area's fine dude ranches, visiting the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, or taking advantage of the area's outdoor recreational activities. We would like to extend our personal invitation to have you visit Old Trail town and Cody, Wyoming. The Old Trail Town collection now consists of 26 buildings, which date from 1879 to 1901, one hundred horse-drawn vehicles, plus an extensive collection of Native American artifacts and memorabilia of the Wyoming frontier. Native American artifacts are representative of Shoshone, Gros Ventre, and Crow indian culture and heritage. Old Trail Town interprets the American West and Wyoming's colorful western past with its buildings and extensive collection of treasured memorabilia reflecting live on the Wyoming Frontier as well as the lives of many of Wyoming's colorful historical figures. These include John "Jeremiah" Liver Eating" Johnston, Jim White "Buffalo Hunter," Phillip Vitter, a trapper killed by a grizzly bear, W.A. Gallagher and Blind Bill, cowboys murdered in 1894. Of course, the story of the West is incomplete without the mention of Sundance Kid and Butch Cassidy, outlaws, and Curry, General Custer's Crow Indian scout, and General Custer Himself. The Rivers Saloon pictured above was built at the mouth of Wood River, west of present-day Meeteetse, Wyoming, in 1888. It was frequented by cowboys, gold miners, outlaws, and other colorful characters of the old West. Bullet holes can still be seen in the door. The "Hole in The Wall" gang's cabin is a two-room log cabin built on Buffalo Creek in the "Hole in the Wall" country in 1883 by Alexander Ghent. It was a rendezvous for Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and other outlaws of the region.

Cijin District is a district of Kaohsiung City, Republic of China in southern Taiwan, covering the entire Cijin Island. Most of its residents are employed by the shipping industry. Cijin Island was once connected to the mainland at the southern tip, but in 1975, this link was severed to create a second entry point to the Port of Kaohsiung. (Source: Wikipedia)

It is a beautiful fall day. People are parking their cars to go for a walk. One car is driving through the drive-in bank. Behind the drive-in bank is a parking lot and then a row of trees alongside the river. Can you see them?--The sky is reflecting in the upper windows. The colored maples are reflecting in one of the big windows. The other big window shows the reflection of the steps which lead up to the Dept. of Library building. I was very happy how this shot turned out. (p3767-833k)

Overhanging lanterns at the entrance of Tien Hou Temple, Cijin, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, March, 2008
published by: sgss_1965
In 1673, several persons escorted the golden icon of Ma-Zu from Meizhou of Fujian Province to Da Gou Harbor on an ancient sailboat. When they landed on Ci Hou, fire came out of the censer (a container, usually covered, in which incense is burned, esp. during religious services; thurible) and the spirit instructed them to settle in Ci Hou. So the foundation of Tien Hou Temple was laid there to serve the Queen of Heaven. On August 19, 1985, Tien Hou Temple became a designated Class C historical landmark in accordance with the announcement of the Ministry of the Interior. The only temple of Kaohsiung City placed under protection as a significant cultural asset, Tien Hou Temple is the religious center of Ci Hou. (Source: plaque in front of temple) Chinese characters on the lanterns are 'Tien Hou Temple', 'Respected Queen of Heaven' and 'Safety for the whole territory'.

The history of Pike Place Market is as rich and colorful as Seattle itself. Its nine acres and 100 years of operation encompass thousands of unique and interesting stories — stories of immigration, internment, gentrification and urban renewal — that explains why Pike Place Market is called "The Soul of Seattle."

Wall Street in Ocean Grove, NJ [I call it Antique Alley]
published by: amberwayne52
In this beautiful old Victorian town, Ocean Grove NJ, there are many of these alleys between the streets. I loved this one because of the antique store that was on it and all the lovely antiques outside against the wall. The sign was beautiful too - and it certainly was a hidden treasure.

This beautiful yellow Victorian mansion is across the street from the Marble House on Bellevue Avenue. Besides the stately, elegant and HUGE mansions that are owned by the Newport Historical Society and open to the public as museums, there are still some wealthy folks who actually live in some gorgeous mansions on this street. This one was of my favorite ones - I can almost see in my mind a beautiful old horse and carriage riding through these gates, can't you?

Construction Zone
published by: christianchen
In preparation for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, many of Vancouver's streets are a virtual construction zone, with many shops and businesses suffering because of the challenge it is to gain access to their premises. In some areas, the construction has ended, and it wonderful to see trees, buildings and streets once again without the barricade of the retaining construction gates. The odd thing about the top left image was the 'Keep Right' sign in an area where it was only possible to keep left. Also, the lower right image is a capture of one of the massive construction scenes I have ever witnessed in the Greater Vancouver area, the rapid transit system which is scheduled to connect downtown Vancouver to Vancouver's International Airport (YVR). In some areas it has completely altered the face of the community. In the City of Richmond, for example, much of the commercial area along No 3 Road has lost its small-town charm, with trees removed and flower planters gone, and the 'Skytrain' completely above ground, since tunnels were not a viable option there. Once construction is complete, and landscaping has been done, that should hopefully be restored somewhat.

This picture was taken on a sunny afternoon, however, the bright movie floodlights fooled the camera, creating the appearance that the pictures were taken at night.
