Ostuni is a small city in the province of Brindisi situated about 8 km from the coast. Its main economic activities include tourism, known for its nearby pristine beaches, as well as a vibrant olive and grape agribusiness. Ostuni's area has been inhabitated since the Stone age. The town is reputed to have been originally established by the Messapii, a pre-classic tribe, and destroyed by Hannibal during the Punic Wars. It was then re-built by Greek colons, since the current name derives from the Greek Astu néon ("new town"). Sacked after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, in 996 AD the town became part of the Norman County of Lecce. From 1300 to 1463 was part of the Principality of Taranto and from 1507 (together with Villanova and Grottaglie) passed to the Dukedom of Bari of Isabella, wife to Gian Galeazzo Sforza, Duke of Milan. Under the lordship of Isabella, Ostuni enjoyed a golden-age within the wider panorama of the Italian Renaissance age. In this period Isabella took under her protection humanists and people of art and letters, including bishop Giovanni Bovio. Isabella died in 1524 and Ostuni passed as dowry to her daughter Bona Sforza, wife-to-be of Sigismund II Augustus King of Poland. Also during Bona Sforza's government, Ostuni enjoyed a liberal and magnanimous regimen. In particular, in 1539 she had towers built along all the shoreline, in order to prevent eventual attacks from the Turks controlling the Balkans. These towers (still existing, incl. Pozzella Tower, the Pylon, Villanova and much more), were permanently garrisoned and communicated through ignited bonfire. The so-called "Old Town" is Ostuni's citadel build on the top of a hill and still fortified with the ancient walls. Ostuni is reputed an architectural jewel, and is commonly referred to as "the White Town" ("La Città Bianca", in Italian) for its white walls and its typically white-painted architecture.

My shining hour! My star will shine but one night and then fade into glory by late morning. This one's name is "Betty Sunshine" after my dear little GA buddy who introduced me to this jewel of nature. Best viewed full size to see the full effects of this shimmering satin beauty.

A gentle light from the sun shines on this blanket of freshly fallen snow. I looked out over this sight of elegant white, and it appeared to be shining like real diamonds,gleaming as far as my eyes could see.

This lovely willow tree got completely thrashed a few years back by a winter storm, it took out half the front branches.

We had at least another 6 inches overnight!! We put out a goodly amount of corn to feed our regular mallard population and after walking the dogs I decided to let them out into the backyard while Jim was busy digging out the driveways! So this is Bisquit and Zoe in the snow. Zoe absolutely loves it!..... Should've Photoshopped this and it would've been nice and white like the previous photo!

Departure Creek goes through our property. We're only using one bridge at the moment which is why this one looks so tidy! The gates are to keep the dogs on the patio so they don't chase the mallards who come for breakfast!

This is what it is like in Florida in the winter. After a rainstorm, we threw out some bread as there was one egret on the lawn. Within a few minutes there were several other egrets including a snowy egret, quite a few gulls and some crows waiting for handouts!

Opossums have a very short life for their size -- one website indicated that they live from 2-4 years while another site said 1-2 years.

This was Zahir earlier this summer after his bath and a good run thru the back forty. He is not a 'white' horse; he is grey.

Usually found by national park workers after a long winter with deep snow...this bison skull has an interesing history and seems comfortable in the new fallen snow...the breezes having exposed things that had been buried beneath.

It has been snowing for 2 weeks here just North of Seattle, we have 16 inches on the ground been trapped for 7 days, started to rain today, the end is near I hope!!

This shot was taken from the Manastash Ridge Viewpoint looking back over Ellensburg and the Kittitas Valley. The weather inversion you see causes dense fog at ground level, with clear skies above... very strange to drive in... not to mention tricky.

The cat's imperial look seems to say, "Leave your gifts and go away."

In the summer it is a shady nook for sitting in the shade, but in the winter storm, the scene is not inviting to the visitor.

A white stone frog sits under the hedge and guards the path to the front door.

I captured this picture during a near 100 km wind on our beach in Port Dalhousie, the force of the wind was so strong I had to hold on to a tree, so I would not be blown into the lake!

Look at that left side. Those black spots aren't rocks, but penguins at play. Observers, shivering from afar, are reminded that icebergs are 95% underwater! Yes, this is really, really BIG!

I did not see the silent face in the boat when I took this image.

I was attracted by the beautiful shafts of light surrounding the snow covered wreath and bench. Not until later when I read the placard on the bench, did I realize that the wreath was placed there In Memory of a loved one.

I love the elegance of the pattern and the little bird tracks leading up to it, but silently disappearing...

While the falling snow made for a difficult day to photograph the wonders of the Grand Canyon, it did give me a great opportunity to shoot snow in a grand setting.

It was bitterly cold and windy on the day I took this shot, not so many days ago, but the brilliant white works well with the orange features of Bryce Canyon.

I took a photo of this beautiful swan today at Roath Park in Cardiff South Wales. I was trying out my new 100-400mm zoom lens that dear Hubby bought me for Christmas. I found the lens so heavy My fingers were numb with the cold yet the swans were dazzling in the bright winter sunshine.

The little fir in the front yard needs no dreams - it is December 24th, and it is definitely one of the whitest Chritsmases that I can remember.

Even if these had been red or blue or green, they would still be white!

Once a proud Kentucky farm house, it now stands alone watching over the fields in the rains of winter skies. What stories could it tell of the family that has now moved on. Is that an addition for the aging parents or did the family grow so large that they needed more room? The children probably played under the big tree as Pa worked the fields. Did they sip southern sweet tea on the big porch as they looked out over the fields after a day working the farm? One can only wonder now.

While I was waiting for the sun to set over a popular toboggan run, I noticed this lonesome sleigh. People seem to have forgotten it....
