Constitution of wood Macro [Album - figure on furniture]
published by: Jayramji
This picture was taken from home furniture. Alternate band of autumn wood and spring wood, radiating thin lines are medullary rays. [Dark spots are wide lumened vessel element [as good as vertical pipe line] that conducts water from roots to leaves. These alternate rings are formed by secondary growth [growth in thickness] and hence known as annual rings or growth marks or growth rings. this on different plain of cut looks as figure on wood.

Annual rings and figures on backyard wood. [Album -figure on furniture]
published by: Jayramji
Shows annual rings, number of rings indicates the age of plant, there are two alternate rings spring wood and autumn wood, secondary growth is more in spring as leaves transpired more water, so plant has to conduct more water, vessels and tracheids thus formed has wide lumen. reverse to that Winter no leaves less transpiration so growth is less, lumen of vessel is narrow hence bloked by gum so looks dark [autumn wood].

Ireland,Wooden Statue of a Druid
published by: haneveercoremansshots
In the South of Ireland. In Celtic polytheism the word druid denotes the priestly class in ancient Celtic societies, which existed through much of Western Europe and in Britain and Ireland until they were supplanted by Roman government and, later, Christianity. Druidic practices were part of the culture of all the tribal peoples called "Keltoi" and "Galatai" by Greeks and "Celtae" and "Galli" by Romans, which evolved into modern English "Celtic" and "Gaulish". They combined the duties of priest, arbitrator, healer, scholar, and magistrate

These wooden planes are replicas, built by hand, by the craftsmen who currently work in the Joyner's shop. In Penn's time the Joyners would have built furniture for his home, yokes for the oxen and anything else needed around the manor that could be made from wood. The Joyner's that currently work in the shop make period furniture for the manor entirely by hand with the wooden tools they've made.

very old "stone wood" ... closeup of roots, cross section of trunk
published by: faranya100
This lycopod tree is about 300,000,000 years old. It is located on the beach at Joggins, Nova Scotia, which is currently in the final stages of being considered as a United Nations World Heritage Site. It is often termed "The Coal Age Galapagos" because many of the fossils found there represent the earliest known specimens of their kind. Paleontologists consider it one of the world's best locations for studying the Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian) Period. Please view full size to get the detail of the root system. Here's a link to a current (October 9) news story regarding this amazing site. http://thechronicleherald.ca/NovaScotia/944744.html

Old entrance to Fort Pike in New Orleans. Fort Pike is a decommissioned 19th century fort which formerly guarded the Rigolets pass in Louisiana. It is now within the city limits of New Orleans, and was long a tourist attraction. It was damaged by the Hurricane Katrina storm surge in 2005. The fort was built in 1818 to guard against British reinvasion of the United States. It came under the control of the Louisiana Continental Guard in 1861, just weeks before Louisiana joined the Confederacy. The Union reclaimed the fort in 1862 while resident troops were engaged at the Battle of Vicksburg. The fort was abandoned in 1890, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Despite having changed hands multiple times in a history spanning at least two major wars, no cannon was ever fired in battle at Fort Pike. The storm surge caused extensive damage to the fort and destroyed adjacent state park buildings. The site is closed to visitors indefinitely.

I also like manual focus Nikon glass, super sharp fast glass that won't kill your wallet. Thanks for looking-Tom

Matrioshki, Nizhnyi Novgorod, Russia
published by: russpsych
In the ninetieth years of XIX century in the Moscow toy workshop " Children's education " was brought a figure of the good-natured bald old man of wise man Fukuruma from Japan. It represented a little enclosed one in another of figures. The turner on a tree Vasily Zvezdochkin has turned similar figures which also were put one in another from a tree. On the first nested doll the girl in simple city suit has been represented: a sundress, an apron. The toy consisted of eight figures. The image of the girl alternated with the image of the boy, differing from each other. Last represented the baby. The name "Matriona" then was widely widespread. From here the name - "nested dolls" also has gone.

Benjamin Foss wooden tugboat
published by: windflowers43
I love the Tugs and feel a special connection to them and to seafaring life. My Grandfather had a tug called the "Sunset" It was moored at the end of the dock on the Duwamish waterway in Seattle. I have heard different reports and do not know if he had another called "The Flying Dutchman" but that is what we have believed all of these years. As children, my brother and I would go down to the marina and sneak on board the different boats just because we loved them so much. Whenever I see the tugs, I remember those days as a child and how special these work-horses of the sea are.

ALONG THE ERIE CANAL
published by: dmsquare
Sometimes, it is hard to tell what is metal and what is wood---however the era of this building along the Erie Canal suggests that wood was primarily used. Most of the metal pieces seen--which are not many--are mainly used to keep the building together. If it is true that windows are the eyes of a building, it would be so interesting to see what this window has seen as it does face the Erie canal. In some parts of the Canal, where it is restored, they do use the barges and mules to move items and people for a ride of history.

Our late friend June, an artist and pro photographer, would have liked this photo. I was so inspired by how creative she was with her photos, that I saw the beauty in this wood pile. We lost our friend the end of May - she was a cancer survivor three times.

Trees
published by: rjscholten
I think that I shall never see, A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest, Against the sweet earth's flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray; A tree that may in summer wear, A nest of robins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree. (Joyce Kilmer, 1886–1918)

Waikamoi Rainforest Nature Preserve Maui Hawai'i

Waikamoi Rainforest Nature Preserve Maui Hawai'i ~ "A gigantic tree doesn't become that by knowing it's a tree while still a seed. It only knows growth. Constantly changing, while still remaining the same. Being not at all concerned with end results, it is content just to grow and not know where it is going. The seedling, shoot and mature tree aren't the goal, but the process-- the journey." Author Unknown

published by: ourjrny
Ku - The youngest brother is known as the warrior and the god of the war and chiefs, god of the forests, canoe making, and fishing. Through out ancient times he was feared and had no friends because of his heated temper and destructive personality. Through his brothers, he learned how to love life and he provides spiritual visions using goals and objectives for the family. A fierce protector, if I encountered this demi-god on a path I would stop in my tracks! This amazing Tiki I found in the garden at Mama's Fish House, Pa'ia, Maui

I like the contrast of the two, especially with the strong red color in the background. I tried to shoot this where the dof was just narrow enough to blur the model, while keeping the post sharp.

Carved Trinity Tree is made from a dead sycamore in Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland. It is close to to St Mary’s Church. Chilean wood sculptor, Juan Carlos Lizana Correno was commissioned by local parish priest, Canon Pádraig ÓFiannachta, to work on the tree. It depicts the three persons in the Trinity and the main teachings of the Church. Also there is evidence of God’s bounty, with the miracle of loaves and fishes.

David Spencer Limited - wash wringer
published by: sigfusson
This hand made solid wood wash wringer was manufactured by the David Spencer Limited Co., and comes complete with iron clamps for attaching to a wash tub and tension screws for the rollers. A few years back a family memeber wanted to toss it in the garbage, and I told her she was crazy. I took it home (along with an antique canoe oar) to artfully display in my rec-room. It is quite heavy and weathered, but still functions as well as it did the day it was made. I wanted to photograph this wringer in a way that would emphasize the details. Being that it is a relic of sorts, I felt it best to treat it like an artifact and used a solid black background for the shot.

The chapel of the Holy Cross, Santa Cruz Huatulco.
published by: lorrainemx
Many years ago St. Thomas, or in Mexican tradition Quetzalcoat, arrived on this beach with a beautiful cross which proved indestructable. The Nahuatl Indians reverred this man and his cross, and the name Huatulco originates from quahtolco meaning 'the place where the wooden log is adored.' A splinter from this cross has been placed in the alter, and other splinters are in Rome, and Mexico City. This chapel was built in 1999 on the beach and is open on three sides.

detail of an old wood ware house, near the sea coast, used to store salt; these traditional ware houses are made of pine wood; pine wood resists to salt water and this natural material were used in the 16th century to build the boats that Europeans used to discover the whole world and learn new sea routes; the rust spreads over the years with the dominant wind that comes from the sea.

the path
published by: blackbelt_chick
Now this is a photograph I feel very emotional when I look at. Maybe not a good emotional. When I look at the trees, I think about how healthy and alive they are, and nature and then I see the path of wood, and I think of how humans cut down those same trees standing - a lot of them were like this - and made them into a path so we could walk through the still alive ones. Kind of makes me think, that's all. I don't know if I came across explaining it very well, but I do have mixed emotions and bittersweet feelings when I look back at this photograph I took.

Touch wood - October 2007
published by: 854847
To 'touch wood' I prefer to touch this one, because it is made out of pure wood, out of wood from more than 20 different trees. This is the view from above on a wooden gem of a box. Within the box many partitions. It is one of the pieces my father created on his way to get his master craftsman's diploma. He dedicated it to a young woman and convinced her later to become his wife and later mother of his five children. - My father always said, he hated this difficult work with the different colors of veneer, glue and hours of polishing, but it gave him patience and later, in old age, the love to restore hundreds of antique pieces of furniture for museums. I really love to touch this piece of wood he build more than 70 years ago.

Wooden Wheel and Ring Gears
published by: rjscholten
Inside the Windmill De Zwaan there is a large cogged wheel and ring gear system that transfers the horizontal motion of the bladed central vane shaft into vertical motion for the grindstone/millstone, which is then be used for grinding grain. The cogged spur wheel, with its wooden teeth, turns the millstones through the smaller gears, known as stone nuts, which can be moved to disengage them (as in this photo) when the grinding stones are not in use. IMG_2332a Cathedral Church of St Peter, Adelaide South Australia
published by: waterl00
Beautiful wood everywhere. Each pew has been engraved in memory of a priest. Dedicated in 1910 and made of English oak, the reredos contains 22 Panels and figures which surround a representation of Christ in majesty. The four coloured panels beneath depict scenes from the life and time of St. Peter. Immediately above the altar are four uncoloured, carved medallions representing the four Evangelists. Leonard Brown, a priest monk of the Russian Orthodox Church, made the icon in 1993. The icon depicts the virgin Mary and the infant Jesus. Candles are lit here as an aid to prayer. A written prayer has been prepared in front of the icon for anyone to read during contemplation.

The new wooden viewing area over the bay at Hallett Cove Conservation Park, South Australia. The geological record shows 600 million years ago a shallow sea covered this land. Three unconformities can be seen at Hallett Cove - a rare occurrence. This is one of the main reasons it was declared a conservation park in 1976.

It was cold and very windy on the beach this evening yet there are still some brave people fishing from the jetty. (I have also entered this shot in the creative challenge - wood).
