Jagdgeschwader 27 -JG 27- was a World War II Luftwaffe Geschwader -a fighter Group. It was most famous for service in the North African Campaign, supporting the Deutsches Afrikakorps. Although it was first formed in Handorf, Germany in1939, it had an emblem representing a lion and the continent of Africa in their airplanes to honor their group commander Helmut Riegel -killed in action 20 July 1940- who was born in German South West Africa. This Luftwaffe fighter group saw considerable action both during the Battle of France and later during the Battle of England before moving to Africa.
