By Francois Clouet. Duchesse d'Etampes (1508 - 1580), mistress of Francis I of France. She became embroiled in a dispute with Diane Poitiers, his son Henri's mistress. When Francois died, she was banished.
She wears a reticulated (net-pattern) headdress on the back of her head, an "escoffion."
