The bobbin winder arm is raised. It lays back against the belt guard when not in use. The winder is driven by the treadle belt (I think). There is a big bobbin winder tire in the base.

The bobbin winder arm lays over the bottom and a shorter tab locks behind a notch, popping free when the bobbin is full.
