Britain's first military airman was Captain Bertram Dickson, Royal Regt of Artillery. In 1910 he learned to fly in France, qualifying on 12th May 1910. In that year he demonstrated arial reconnaisance on Salisbury Plain. This led to the RFC, and the RAF.

The main gate was a hundred yards back from the road, shielded by a small birch wood. The guardroom was adjacent to the gate, and behind that was the large concrete square, abour 300 yards across. To the right were the boiler house, gymnasium, sergeants mess, then the airmens mess. The extended WVS hut was rebuilt behind the airmens mess. After a green space used for football practice, there was a row of barrack huts divided into rooms with four beds, down the right hand boundary fence. The last five huts were WAAF accomodation, in a further wire enclosure. See notes on the next picture for details of the left hand side of the square.
