75 - Nothing But Roses (roses from my garden)
published by: ykarelic4
"My rose, all on her own, is more important than you altogether, since she's the one I've watered. Since she's the one I put under glass. Since she's the one I sheltered behind a screen. Since she's the one for whom I killed the caterpillars (except for two or three for butterflies). Since she's the one I listened to when she complained, or when she boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing at all. Since she's my rose." - 'The Little Prince' by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Thanks to one of my WS friends, I have found out, This is actually " AN AMERICAN LOTUS" This water lily lives on the neighbor's pond, to be back of our house. It is 10 to 12 inches in diameter. The lily pads are 2 to 2 1/2 feet in diameter. Growing along the edge of the pond, covering about 1/3 of one side. Belongs to the neighbors, but closer and more visible, to us, from our back yard.

A Celtic Symbol of Nobility of Character
published by: TeriWall
Thistle.... prickly, but still so pretty.
In the language of flowers, the thistle (like the burr) is an ancient Celtic symbol of nobility of character as well as of birth, for the wounding or provocation of a thistle yields punishment. For this reason the thistle is the symbol of the Order of the Thistle, a high chivalric order of Scotland.
Another story is that a bare foot Viking attacker stepped on one at night and cried out, so alerting the defenders of a Scottish castle.[3] Whatever the justification, the national flower of Scotland is the thistle. It is found in many Scottish symbols and as the name of several Scottish football clubs. Carnegie Mellon University features the thistle in its crest.

Last of the Crab Apple Blossoms

Morning Glory
published by: TeriWall
Taken at the edge of my driveway using a Kodak Z650 EasyShare Digital.
Morning glory was first known in China for its medicinal uses, due to the laxative properties of its seeds. It was introduced to the Japanese in the 9th century, and they were first to cultivate it as an ornament. A rare brownish-coloured variant known as Danjuro is very popular. During the Edo Period, it became a very popular ornamental flower. Aztec priests in Mexico were also known to use the plant?s hallucinogenic properties. (see Rivea corymbosa).
Ancient Mesoamerican civilizations used the morning glory species Ipomoea alba to convert the latex from the Castilla elastica tree and also the guayule plant to produce bouncing rubber balls. The sulfur in the morning glory?s juice served to vulcanize the rubber, a process pre-dating Charles Goodyear?s discovery by at least 3,000 years.
The flower usually lasts for a single morning and dies in the afternoon. On a cloudy day, the flower may last until night. New flowers bloom each day. The flowers usually start to fade a couple of hours before the petals start showing visible curling. They prefer full sun throughout the day and mesic soils. Some morning glories, such as Ipomoea muricata, are night blooming flowers.

The Glen and Trail
published by: rmeredithiii
This is a 10000 year old stream that has cut a 700 foot deep narrow gorge in the NY Finger Lakes region by Seneca Lake. This is Watkins Glen State Park and this is one of many cascades along a 1.5mile track inside the bottom of the gorge. I took this at a longer exposer by installing a fairly dark ND lens cover to allow the sensor more time to process the image. I took this shoot ten times in order to get the image just right and vivid. I shoot this hand hold braced against a cold wet rock wall with water streaming down on me. This is a wider angle of the first photo and just catches part of the garge trail to the top right. This was my bast photo during the trip, i hope you like it. Come on Webshots, pick me pick me for POD!!!
