This kind of bridge is called "MURINSEL", because it builds an island in the middle of the river Mur, which flows through the town of Graz. It was built in 2003 by the american architect Vito Acconci in order to celebrate Graz as european cultural town of that year. It's made by steel, iron and glass; like a bridge it connects the two banks of the river creating in the meantime an artificial island with bars and a congress hall.

a simple story the artist translates,
of countryside and grey weathered board,
Icy water and splashed worn rocks
quiet solidtude, dampening brink
Trees brown branches bare in winter,
lifted arms, blossoms not seem, stored.

American River old railroad bridge
published by: pamsavelo
The abandoned Mountain Quarry railroad bridge, sometimes referred to as the “No Hands Bridge”. A short hike from route 49, the 80 foot (24 mtr) high, triple concrete arch was originally built in 1912 by the Pacific Portland Cement Company to provide access to a limestone quarry. The rail line was a 10 mile (16 km) spur from the Southern Pacific mainline in Auburn. Around 1939 the line and bridge were abandoned. The integrity of the structure was tested in December of 1964 when the Hell Hole Dam broke upstream of the bridge. The ensuing flood took out the road bridge just upstream of the railroad bridge. The remains of this bridge can still be seen in the river

a bridge for the Sauschwänzlebahn (using "posterize" effect)
published by: christianchen
There is a unique museum train in the southern Black Forest that is a must see if you are ever near Blumberg, Germany or the Wutach Canyon. It uses good-old fashioned steam locomotives, and although the distance from departure to destination is only some 9.6 km (just under 6 miles) long straight as the crow flies, the terrain to be overcome proved to be so challenging that it required a track that is about 25 km (ca 15.5 miles) long which consists of an incredible network of bridges and tunnels. ~~ The longest tunnel is 1,025 meters (ca 3/4 mile) long. One of the tunnels requires the train to make a 360 degree turn - and it is this turn which gave the train its name, the Sauschwänzlebahn (= pigtail train). The journey provides many photo ops, and is a lot of fun. It is fascinating to think that the engineering design and implementation was a feat accomplished more than 100 years ago, long before computers were in vogue. ~~ There is a website on this most unusual train, however it is only available in the German language. If you need a translation into another language, you might want to try a translation service such as provided by google. You can check it all out the following link which you will need to copy&paste onto your browser window: http://www.sauschwaenzlebahn.de/ceasy/modules/cms/main.php5?cPageId=1

For a glimpse of some of that view, here are the Lions, as they are called. "A mineral-water bottling station exists in Slanic-Moldova, the resort being renowned for its springs of carbonated, bi-carbonated, slightly sulphurous, chlorided, sodic,
hypertonic, hypotonic and certain multi-mineral waters. Discovered in 1801 and for the first
time chemically tested in 1852, those springs have been exploited since 1877 and have confirmed their therapeutic qualities in the course of time, being awarded with medals at international exhibitions in Paris, Vienna, Frankfurt am Main, etc., experts comparing them to
the mineral waters of Karlovy Vary, Vichy, Aix-les-Bains, a.o. Tourists and patients can go from Slanic-Moldova to Targu-Ocna (18 km), to

Ponte Rialto - Venice
published by: adrisimari
"The bridge as we see it today was built between 1588–1591 by Antonio Da Ponte whose design was presented together with those of the most famous architects of that time. The construction was difficult because of the instability of the site and the height (25 feet). As we see it now, it is a great architectural masterpiece for its two sides of arcades, and contributes to make great the view of the Grand Canal." (veniceclick)

And if you are in the neighbourhood, be sure to check out the "Scheffellinde" just a few steps away which has both a hotel and a restaurant featuring home-cooked meals. The portions are generous, so do feel free to ask for a half-portion even if it is not marked on the menu. That way you will have room for dessert! By the way, this is a good place to stay if you would like to visit the musem train mentioned earlier.
