The tree is surrounded by ice - floodwaters that froze in winter, and the forest is actually mirrored in the ice. The ring around the tree is formed by the ice melting because of the darker, therefore warmer tree-trunk.

The light inside the forest is so beautiful

With the location of their water supply no longer a secret, the need for a well inside the fortress became more evident. With the castle atop a calcareous mountain, however, it meant digging down 146m through solid rock. Work on the well began in 1623 and took 17 years to complete. The work was done by two Turkish prisoners who were promised their freedom once it was finished (but they were still killed afterwards). The well provided extra security as it meant the people didn't have to go outside the gates at all during a siege. It was in use until 1850 when the wheel broke.

Local trees again

Many of the leaves were off the trees, but those fallen leaves only added to the overwhelming beauty of these autumn scenes.

White faces betray their English heredity!

The shade provided by the forest enables ferns to thrive in the wet climate here.

The air temp was below zero when I came upon this scene. The open water was steaming up into the fridged air. All of a sudden this little duck stepped off the bank and gently swam across the scene, giving me this amazing photo. You can see in the background that the rising mist from the brook is refreezing onto the branches of the trees.

Looking into a forest always brings excitement on what you will find there.

what is more enchanting and magical than life born from death? This photo taken in the forest at Rockingham is one of my favorites. From the dead brown leaves on the forest floor bursts forth life in the beautiful new green plant/tree. Nothing more amazing, enchanting and magical than that.

Reest comes from a source in Drenthe and meanders through forests and heath of the Reestdal

The Lambert Castle Lookout tower is indeed enchanted. Some also believe it to be haunted. The tower is in the woods at the top of the mountain in Garrett Mountain Reservation. Only recently the county park commission has cleared the trees from in front and around it as they are restoring the tower and will open it to the public. This photo was taken in 2007 before the trees were removed. To me it looks like Rapunsel’s tower in the midst of the forest, doesn’t it?

Coming back up the path through the forest from the canal at Rockingham, as you near the clearing you look through the trees and see the Visitor center stone cottage. It reminds me of what Hansel and Gretal might have seen coming through the woods, seeing the witch’s cottage and thinking it was something magical and wonderful.

All three entries are about 3 minutes from my cabin. My home is on top the far ridge. The Coosawattee flows through the woods for miles inside our gates. The North Georgia Mountain Forests. My place in paradise or my enchanted forest.

What person would not want to live in the enchanted spot on the ridge surrounded by mountains and forests. My cabin is on another ridge 2 minutes from here. I can look down on the Coosawattee or look across to mountain ridges. I am 4 miles from the closest gate surrounded by a forest of 8,000 acres. The North Georgia Mountain Forests. My place in paradise or my enchanted forest.

I love seeing wildlife, and this youngster was certainly enchanting. The deer in our woods used to be fairly tame and didn't mind seeing me. Then we got a young dog..............

This is a replica of the barn that originally stood here. It was where Walt would hang out and draw also. Walt had one just like it built on the grounds of Disneyland in CA and it still stands today. Inside you can write whatever you want on the walls and there was many surprises inside.

This was taken at the Grand Rapids Museum. They have it set up in there to look like a real forest setting. I enjoy seeing the wildlife when they're not stuffed. It makes me stand still, watch them, and see what they will do.

Palms are different from all other trees, but they definitely have their special charm and magic. :-)

This tree is huge and I don't think I ever saw a higher pine than this one. Looking up takes the breath away. A view full of magic. Oh yes, I love trees! :-)

interesting tree we found that was formed very strange, from different angles looked like a dog, a rhino or some kind of creature.

One of the best things about hiking in the woods is finding a brook, a stream, a pond or a waterfall. This beautiful brook followed us as we hiked toward the waterfalls.

Found this marvelous and unique tree with its roots forming a cave house for a hobbit, don't you think?
