In a Church, Tsaritzino, Moscow, Russia
published by: russpsych
The Church in the name of Holy Mother's icon “Our Lady Life-Giving Spring” was founded when the Black Dirt (former name of Tsaritsyno) estate was in possession of the Golicins boyar family. Wooden initially, the church is devoted to the icon, the plot of which appeared in the wall paintings at the beginning of the 14 th century and at the end of the 17 th century - in the icons. The iconography of this canon comes from Constantinople, and in the 17 th century it was associated with healing of physical infirmities.

Cherokee Indian Chief Vann's Dinning Room as it was in 1805 captured by candlelight only
published by: police370
All lighting was by candlelight for this picture and all others in this album. Chief Vann celebrated a candlelight Christmas like this in 1805 when he invited the Moravian Missionaries to his home. This two story brick home was built by the Chief and was his residence until he was murdered in 1807. His son lived here until the Cherokee were relocated from Georgia to Oklahoma in what is know as the Trail of Tears during the Georgia Gold Rush in 1838.Chief Vann was one of the richest Cherokee. See the rest of the album for a tour of the entire two stories plus attic and basement.

Dining table area inside an 1830's one room log Cherokee Indian Dwelling House
published by: police370
This is a one room log cabin where the poorer Cherokee lived in Georgia in the early 1800s. A big contrast to the Chief Vann's dinning room in the previous image. All lighting for the capture was by candlelight.

Details of an 1803 fireplace mantle as it meets the ceiling
published by: police370
Built by Cherokee Indian, Chief Vann. Candlelight is used for the lighting here in a Christmas Celebration as it was in 1805. The ceiling is tall. I wanted to show the detail of the fireplace mantel area and shot it from an angle off to one side. Lower areas are shown in other pictures in this album of the Candlelight Christmas Celebration as it was in 1805. I find this a most unusual dwelling for a Cherokee Indian. It was built by Chief Vann in 1803 and completely finished in early 1804

Beautiful Holy Blood Basilica

The interior of the Basilica of the Holy Blood / Helig Bloed Basiliek. A rock crystal phial kept in this church is said to contain Christ's blood, washed from His body by Joseph of Arimathea. It was probably acquired by the Christians following the Sacking of Constantinople in 1204. When I visited here visitors (including myself) queued up to touch the phial of blood.

Of course that goes with knowing you have nothing to find. We took in great fun and that started a great laugh for a fun trip.

O'Conners Pub, Dooleen
published by: uriguri
'Bhi craic agus ceol againn': We had fun and music. Craic being an Irish language word for good times, gossip, music, drinking, debauchery of any kind, or good clean fun. No real English equivalent. Fun doesn't really cut it though. General banter, good times had by all. Also, a person who is good fun/great company If asked this question by an Irish person, you are expected to give a reply which includes information on how you are, what you are doing, where are you going, with whom are you going there, have you any interesting gossip one might like to hear about, and so on. The shot was taken in O'Conners famous bar, where people from around the world gather just to have some "craic"

Wooden Wheel and Ring Gears
published by: rjscholten
Inside the Windmill De Zwaan there is a large cogged wheel and ring gear system that transfers the horizontal motion of the bladed central vane shaft into vertical motion for the grindstone/millstone, which is then be used for grinding grain. The cogged spur wheel, with its wooden teeth, turns the millstones through the smaller gears, known as stone nuts, which can be moved to disengage them (as in this photo) when the grinding stones are not in use. The Railway Station
published by: pablovieira1980
The darkness brings no quiet here, the light No waking: ever on my blinded brain The flare of lights, the rush, and cry, and strain, The engines' scream, the hiss and thunder smite: I see the hurrying crowds, the clasp, the flight, Faces that touch, eyes that are dim with pain: I see the hoarse wheels turn, and the great train Move labouring out into the bourneless night. So many souls within its dim recesses, So many bright, so many mournful eyes: Mine eyes that watch grow fixed with dreams and guesses; What threads of life, what hidden histories, What sweet or passionate dreams and dark distresses, What unknown thoughts, what various agonies! china town
published by: mcnabb22
Chinatown is located in downtown San Francisco. It is roughly bordered by Powell Street and the Nob Hill District on the west. On the east is Kearny Street and The City's Financial District. On the north is North Beach and Green Street and Columbus Street. On the south is Bush Street and the Union Square area. Despite its decline, it has been slowly expanding northward into the North Beach neighborhood north of Green and Columbus Avenue. Within Chinatown there are two major thoroughfares. One is Grant Avenue ,with the famous Dragon gate on the corner of Bush Street and Grant Avenue; St. Mary's Park that boasts a statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen; a war memorial to Chinese war veterans; and a plethora of stores, restaurants and mini-malls that cater mainly to tourists. The other, Stockton Street ,is frequented less often by tourists, and it presents an authentic Chinese look and feel, reminiscent of Hong Kong, with its produce and fish markets, stores, and restaurants. Chinatown boasts smaller side streets and alleyways that also provide an authentic character.

The ceiling of the church 'Regina Palaestinae', part of a convent near Jerusalem. The patriarch who planed the church wanted to decorate the ceiling and the walls with the first words of 'Hail Mary', in as many languages as possible. He asked bishops around the world to provide him with the officials translation of that prayer. By doing this the patriarch wanted the people of the world to participate in honoring 'the Queen of all people' He received 404 translations and chose 280 to decorate the wall and the ceilings.

St Magnus Cathedral
published by: bergjagger
A spectacular view looking up into the high ceiling of Kirkwall's St Magnus Cathedral. The story of the cathedral is a fascinating one.In the early 12th century the Norse Earldom of Orkney had the misfortune to be governed by the sons of the two brother Earls, Paul and Erlend. Where the brothers had shared the rule of the Earldom peaceably, the two first cousins, Hakon Paulson and Magnus Erlendson did not, and the differences between them widened as time went on, and both cousins attracted followers who enjoyed causing trouble between the Earls.Magnus was said to be the more popular of the two, a man of peace and great authority, while Hakon was known to be warlike and envious of the popularity of his cousin. Matters between the cousins reached a crisis in the year 1116 or 1117, and well-meaning friends of the two Earls sought to bring them together by arranging a meeting in the Easter of that year, on the island of Egilsay. Each Earl was to bring two ships and a limited number of men, and both agreed to this. As Earl Magnus crossed to the island, a great wave appeared out of deep sea and crashed down on the stern of the ship. This was seen as a bad omen, though Magnus carried on. And when Earl Hakon was seen to have landed a large force of fully-armed men from eight longships, Earl Magnus refused to allow his men to defend him from his cousin and sought to settle matters in a friendly way, and prayed to God for help in this. Earl Magnus made three offers to his cousin, rather than have Hakon suffer the guilt of killing him. He offered to go on pilgrimage to Rome or Jerusalem, and never return to Orkney. Hakon refused. Magnus then offered to be held in imprisonment for the rest of his life. Hakon refused. Magnus then said that Hakon could blind him, or maim him, and cast him into a dungeon. And Hakon accepted this, but then the followers of both men became angry, and said that one of them must die. Magnus was killed by Hakon's cook, ordered to do this because no one else would. He was buried on Egilsay and later at Birsay, where miracles of healing were experienced about his tomb. In the meantime, his nephew Rognvald sought to regain the Earldom for the family by subterfuge and force, from Norway. Failing on his first attempt, it was then suggested that he seek other help in this enterprise, that of his saintly martyred uncle, Earl Magnus. Rognvald then vowed to build a great stone church to the memory of his uncle. His next attempt met with success, and he became sole Earl of Orkney, having deposed Earl Paul Hakonsson, the son of Hakon Paulsson. Earl Magnus was made into a saint in the early 1130's
