The Western Wall
published by: ykarelic4
The Wall consists of 45 stone courses, 28 of them above ground and 17 underground. The first seven visible layers are from the Herodian period. This section of wall is built from enormous stones, most of them weighing between two and eight tons each. Others weigh even more, with one extraordinary stone located in the northern section of Wilson's Arch measuring 13 m and weighing approximately 570 tons. Each of these stones is surrounded by fined chiselled borders. The margins themselves measure between five and twenty cm wide, with their depth measuring 1.5 cm. In the Herodian period, the upper 10 m of wall were one meter thick and served as the other wall of the double colonnade of the plateau. This upper section was decorated with pilasters, the remainders of which were destroyed at the beginning of the seventh century when the Byzantines reconquered Jerusalem from the Persians and their Jewish allies in 628.
The next four layers were added by Umayads in the seventh century. The next fourteen layers are from the Ottoman period and their addition is attributed to Sir Moses Montefiore who in 1866 arranged that further layers be added “for shade and protection from the rain for all who come to pray by the holy remnant of our Temple”. The top three layers were placed by the Mufti of Jerusalem before 1967.

Its inauguration on July 24, 2005 marked the beginning of celebrations dedicated to the Millennium of Kazan.

The Cross stands at the heart of Chester where Bridge, Northgate, Watergate and Eastgate Streets meet, and is an obvious meeting point. It was carved from local sandstone in the 15th century and was badly vandalised during the English Civil War in the 17th century. The Town Crier greets visitors here and religious preachers use the area to express their beliefs. If you are wondering where the actual cross is, study the ball that sits atop the monument! This part of the city also boasts the best view of the rows. The actual Cross is on the left of the picture but sadly I cut it off behind a sign,

WHITE HORSE PLAINS...A MANITOBA LANDMARK
published by: umpa1
THE STORY: Early one summer in the 1690s, a band of Assiniboines was camped on the banks of the Assiniboine River, about ten miles west of present day Winnipeg.
A young Cree brave from Lake Winnipegosis entered the Assiniboine camp and asked if he might marry the chief's daughter. The chief was offered a beautiful and spirited snow-white steed, a Blanco Diablo, which came from the famed breed in Mexico, and an agreement was reached.
This agreement upset a Sioux brave from Devil's Lake in North Dakota, also in love with the chief's daughter. He vowed to capture and torture his rival under the pretext of a reprisal for past wars. Aware of the danger, the Assiniboine chief saddled the white horse, and advised the couple to escape under cover of darkness.
When the Sioux learned of the escape, they followed, and eventually overtook the couple on the west bank of the Assiniboine River a few miles west of where the St. Francois-Xavier parish church now stands. Arrows killed both warrior and his bride.
The white horse escaped, and according to legend, continued to roam the neighbouring plains for many years. The Assiniboines believed that the spirits carried the horse to the spirit world where he was reunited with the Cree brave.
The aboriginal peoples named this land, where the white horse ran free in honour of the powerful animal...We dedicate this photo to our Dear Friend, (Rosemarra)...Marg and Larry...FOR YOUR INFO: This is the same horse that is in silhouette, in "My Prairie Sunsets" album.

"SALS" on the BRIDGE...A Winnipeg Landmark
published by: umpa1
This Salisbury House Restaurant built right on the Esplanade Riel, a bridge connecting the downtown area with the eastern suburb of St. Boniface, is a restaurant chain that is locally known as the "SALS"... It frequently attracts visitors, young and old and is widely considered a Winnipeg landmark. The restaurant chain was initially founded in Downtown Winnipeg in 1931 by Ralph Erwin and was named for the Salisbury steak. Erwin, who disliked the name hamburger, named his burger a "NIP" (which he considered was a nip of Salisbury steak). There are now 20 Salisbury Houses in Winnipeg and the surrounding area. They are owned by a group of local investors, among whom is the musician BURTON CUMMINGS (born December 31, 1947) is a Canadian musician and songwriter. A gifted showman, he was the lead singer for the Canadian rock band The Guess Who. During his 10 years in The Guess Who, from 1965 to 1975, he sang and wrote or co-wrote many well known songs including "American Woman," "No Time," "Share the Land," "Hand Me Down World," "Undun," "Laughing," "No Sugar Tonight," and "These Eyes."

"AGASSIZ ICE"...A WINNIPEG LANDMARK
published by: umpa1
Local Winnipeg artist Gordon Reeve has created a sculpture entitled Agassiz Ice, which is permanently installed at Assiniboine Park, between Portage Avenue and the footbridge. Agassiz Ice is composed of three monumental stainless steel forms and is situated on a promontory overlooking the Assiniboine River. Recalling Glacial Lake Agassiz that once covered an immense area on our North American continent, that included the City of Winnipeg, the sculptures appear to be massive chunks of pristine ice. The tallest is 4 metres high, 5 metres long and weigh 1.2 metric tons
Sculptor Gordon Reeve, a native of Chatham, Ontario, is an Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba School of Art.

Inside The Salisbury House
published by: tigerlady96
A 42-room architectural wonder built between 1923 and 1928 by pioneer cosmetics magnate, Carl Weeks and his wife Edith modeled the House after King's House in Salisbury England. They moved into the House with their four sons in December, 1926.
During the Depression years, financial difficulties and new tax law compelled Weeks to give the House to Drake University in 1934. The arrangement allowed the family to live in the House, providing they opened the house to students studying the fine arts. Mrs. Weeks died in 1954, and that year Drake sold the property to the Iowa State Education Association. The ISEA occupied the house until 1998 when the newly formed Salisbury House Foundation purchased it for $4 million. The House today is a architectural museum of fine art.

This building is a former CPR railroad station built in 1929. Much has changed since it closed almost 30 years ago. The tracks are gone, replaced with walking trails. For years it was used as a public library until a new library was built almost beside it. With St. Stephen being the sixth busiest port of entry into Canada on the U.S. border, this information center for visitors and tourists is a busy landmark, indeed. The Gorge In St. George N.B. From Observation Deck.
published by: 8ballwayne
The Magaguadavic River falls to the sea in St. George, nicknamed" the granite town ", because it is built on and around massive quantities of high quality granite. The dam on the right of this picture was used years ago to produce power for a chipboard producer and a fine granite slab plant, with their products shipped around the world. There is also an observation platform on the lower bridge seen in the distance. Massive amounts of water fall through this gorge with the spring thaw. This is a well known tourist attraction in southern N.B. The fish ladder on the left is to assist salmon and other species of fish on their travels upriver to spawn. I have two more photos of this landmark in my "St. Croix River Valley" album.

Beautiful Memorial for the Victims that died in the World Trade Center and lived on Staten Islan
published by: Sandi209100
Over 200 young and old died that day just being at work and lived on a small Island across the Bay from the World Trade Center..they were honored with this beautiful memorial that has postcards and names of the victims. The beautiful Statue of Liberty and Manhattan Skyline rests right in front of this beautiful memorial..Located on the St. George Esplanade adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, the memorial, entitled “Postcards,” features two 40-foot-high wing-like sculptures with granite plaques bearing the names of each victim, as well as their profiles in silhouette. The sculptures represent large-scale postcards to the loved ones who perished, and each of the 252 plaques erected thus far on the memorial signifies a commemorative stamp. When viewed from the esplanade, the two “postcards” frame the former site of the World Trade Center across New York Harbor, offering a dramatic tribute to the lives lost in the tragedy. The families of the victims of the September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993 attacks who lived on Staten Island were offered space in the design to memorialize their loved ones and so far 252 have participated.

6254-Old City Hall
published by: anonneymouse1
Toronto's Old City Hall was home to its city council from 1899 to 1966 and remains one of the city's most prominent structures. It is at the corner of Queen and Bay Streets, opposite the new City Hall in the centre of downtown Toronto. It has a distinctive clock tower which heads the length of Bay Street from Front to Queen. The tower stands a 104m tall (340 ft).
Work on the Romanesque Revival building designed by E.J. Lennox began in 1889. Lennox "signed" his name in scrollwork around the first floor exterior. When it opened on September 18, 1899 it was the largest building in Toronto, and the largest municipal building in North America.
The clock face stands at 6 metres. See Wikipedia for more information.

Beauty and Shame
published by: rjscholten
The battle that took place here is described on a plaque in Battle Rock Park, which is adjacent to Battle Rock, and that was dedicated to the memory of the Dene Tsut Dah, the ancient people that first lived here, and also to the founders of Port Orford. Sadly, in 1850, the U.S. Congress passed what was called the Oregon Donation Land Act. It allowed white settlers to place claims on the Dene Tsut Dah land - without their consent. On June 9, 1851 Captain William Tichenor from the steamship "Sea Gull" landed with nine men in the first attempt to establish a white settlement. War ensued. Tichenors men were on Battle Rock and had a canon from the steamship with them. They were able to hold off the Natives. Some of the Natives were killed, but the white men escaped and later returned with 70 well armed men and took the land from the Dene Tsut Dah. One of the settlers is buried on the rock. (dsc_7749nx)

This shot was taken from Brown Castle, constructed to dominate and protect the port and the gulf (Golfo di Tigullio). Owmed by Napoleon, Garbarino, Barber, it was during Montague Yeats Brown's possession when it reached its highest splendour.

100 Years
published by: rjscholten
The 22-foot by 32-foot structure was constructed in 1906-1907 of riveted iron sheets over a timber framework. While the building was under construction, the fog signal boilers and ten-inch steam whistles from the discontinued station at Calumet were delivered to the pier, and installed in the buildings first floor. While the dwelling on shore would continue to serve as the primary residence for the Head Keeper, bedrooms and living quarters were installed in the second floor to allow the Assistant Keepers to live in the fog signal building itself. To provide illumination and air flow within the living quarters on the second floor, a pair of gabled windows were installed in the roof on each side. A covered passageway was erected between the building and the pierhead beacon to allow movement between the two structures. Reflecting on the increased importance of the station, the lens in the steel beacon was upgraded to a fixed red Fourth Order Fresnel lens, with the new optic exhibited for the first time on the night of June 28, 1907. With this change, the range of visibility for the light increased from 9 miles to 13 miles. Work on the fog signal continued through the summer, and was completed in October of 1907. (dsc_3364nx)

Berlin - Brandenburg Gate
published by: mmarco1954
The Brandenburg Gate is a former city gate and one of the main symbols of Berlin. It is located west of the city center at the intersection of Unter den Linden and Ebertstraße, immediately west of the Pariser Platz. It is the only remaining gate of a series through which one formerly entered Berlin. One block to its north lies the Reichstag. The gate is the monumental entry to Unter den Linden, the renowned boulevard of linden trees which formerly led directly to the city palace of the Prussian monarchs. It was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia as a sign of peace and built by Carl Gotthard Langhans from 1788 to 1791. Today, it is considered one of Europe's most famous landmarks.

The Obelisk, Robe, South Australia
published by: Phreddibus
The obelisk was erected on Cape Dombey in 1852, as a navigational aid. Standing around 12 metres high, on ground 20 metres above sea level, it is visible for 20 kilometres out to sea. It was used to store rocketry equipment for shore-to-ship rescues.
Initially painted white, sea captains complained that it was too hard to see againt the white stone and sand hills behind it: they would be nearly on the rocks, which stretch three kilometres from the base of the cliff, before they could identify the obelisk. It was repainted with red and white stripes in 1862.
The headland on which the obelisk stands is being continually eroded by the waves, and the building is now completely off-limits as the ground becomes increasingly unstable. A modern lighthouse stands some distance away, back from the cliffs.

Some 1,000 men worked every day for four years at the height of the project. The product of their labor stood 311 feet tall from the ground to the toes of the Goddess of Liberty, covered 2 1/4 acres, contained 392 rooms, 18 vaults, 924 windows, 404 doors, 4,000 railroad cars of granite, 11,000 railroad cars of limestone and other materials, and cost $3,744,600 to build.

San Fruttuoso abbey - another Ligurian landmark
published by: ornella173
Most of the current abbey dates back to the X-XI centuries, while the body facing the sea, with its fine "loggiato" with two orders of mullioned windows, was built in the XIII century thanks to the donations of the Doria family. The belfry is one of the most ancient architectural elements of the abbey and of Liguria. The slightly oval spherical dome was surmounted in the X century in accordance with the Byzantine style by an octagonal tower with open-face strips in keeping with the Ottonian tradition.

St. John's Cathedral (Sint Jan)
published by: bubbamcjump
Originally, the cathedral was built as a parish church, but in 1559, it became the cathedral of the diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch.
A Romanesque church used to stand on the spot where the St. John now resides. Its construction is thought to have started in 1220 and was finished in 1340. Around 1340, building began to extend the church, from which its current gothic style came. The transept and choir were finished in 1450. In 1505, the romanesque church was largely demolished, leaving only its tower. Construction of the gothic St. John was finished about the year 1525.
In the year 1584, a fire broke out in the high wooden crossing tower, more majestic than the current one. Soon the whole tower was set ablaze, and it collapsed upon the cathedral itself, taking with it much of the roof up to point where the organ was situated. In 1830, another fire damaged the western tower, which was repaired by 1842.
Underneath the clock tower there is a carillon. The clockwork can be found at the top of the Romanesque tower.
From 1629 to 1810, a Protestant minority used the church, which came to be in a heavily dilapidated state. When Napoleon visited the town in 1810, he restored the building to the Catholics. (source: wikipedia)

Since these plants grow from a "ball" like seed, the field used for cultivating flowers are therefore known here as "bollenveld"...

Rostral Columns..St. Petersburg, Russia

In the early 19th century one of the most elegant architectural ensembles of St Petersburg emerged on the eastern edge (Strelka )of the island. The imposing white colonnaded building of the Stock Exchange became its focal point, and was flanked by two Rostral Columns. The Stock Exchange, designed by the French architect Thomas de Tomon and built between 1805 and 1810, was inspired by the best examples of Ancient Greek and Roman architecture. The two Rostral Columns, studded with ships' prows, served as oil-fired navigation beacons in the 1800s (on some public holidays gas torches are still lit on them).

Maiden tower
published by: rasim1
Maiden's Tower was first built by the ancient Athenian general Alcibiades in 408 BC to control the movements of the Persian ships in the Bosphorus strait.Back then the tower was located between the ancient cities of Byzantion and Chrysopolis. The tower was later enlarged and rebuilt as a fortress by the Byzantine emperor Alexius Comnenus in 1110 AD, and was rebuilt and restored several times by the Ottoman Turks, most significantly in 1509 and 1763. The most recent facelift was made in 1998. Steel supports were added around the ancient tower as a precaution after the 17 August 1999 earthquake.

Charging Bull (sometimes called the Wall Street Bull or the Bowling Green Bull) is a 3,200 kg (7,000 pound) bronze sculpture by Arturo Di Modica that sits in Bowling Green park near Wall Street in New York City.
The sculpture depicts a bull, the symbol of aggressive financial optimism and prosperity, leaning back on its haunches and with its head lowered as if ready to charge.
The sculpture, one of the city's most photographed artworks, has become a tourist destination in the Financial District. It has also come to be an unofficial symbol of the Financial District itself, and it often appears in the local news media to punctuate stories about optimism in the financial market...

Looking from Mt. Scopus down on the old city and the Dome of the Rock. The Dome of the Rock was erected between 685 and 691 CE. The constructors of the Dome hoped the building would serve as a shrine for pilgrims and not as a mosque for public worship.
The Platform for the Dome is the site of the 'Second Jewish Temple', which was destroyed during the Roman Siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE. From the former Temple exists today only it's Western Wall, the so called Wailing Wall.

Acre - Caravansary
published by: 854847
Acre is one of the world's oldest ports and continuously inhabited cities, dating back in recorded history to about 1500 B.C. When London was a town of 10,000 - Acre's population was 40,000. The city has had many names and, as with virtually all of the strategic sites around the Mediterranean, Acre has been conquered many times. It has been a Greek colony, a Roman colony, an Assyrian city, an Arab city, an Egyptian city, a Crusader stronghold, part of the Ottoman Empire, and part of the British Mandate in Palestine. Only Napoleon seems to have failed to conquer Acre, though he definitely tried.

The tower was renovating in May 2006, and retains much of its original beauty. It is situated in a paved, open plaza and was one of the first sights of those coming in from the sea.
