National park & reserve Samarskaya Luka was founded in 1985. It is located in a bend of Volga on a site of Tolyatti-Samara - Syzran which has formed as a result of a deviation of current of Volga river by mountains Zhigulis. Zhiguli Hills, which are 375 m high, stretch out 75 km along the right bank of the Volga. The Zhiguli reserve and national park Samara Bend are called the Volga Switzerland. The unique natural memorial keeps a lot of species of relic plants and animals of preglacial epoch. There are large reserves of crystal clear water in karst cavities. Tourists in Zhiguli can travel on foot or by horse, visit the mountain galleries full of mystery, and come to know the culture of small nations of the region. A lot of anomalous phenomena of the Zhiguli Hills attract much attention. From time to time big luminescent green spheres appear in the sky. Some people associate this with unidentified flying objects, the same as the famous Zhiguli mirages - images of ancient towns, temples and fortresses.

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA
published by: hjaynefoster
Grand Teton National Park is a United States National Park located in western Wyoming, south of Yellowstone National Park. The park is named after Grand Teton, which at 13,770 feet (4,197 m), is the tallest mountain in the Teton Range. The mountains were named by a French trapper who viewed them from the Idaho side of the range and called them tétons, French slang for "nipples" or "teats" (presumably referring to the shape of the peaks). It was established as a national park on February 26, 1929. The park covers 484 mi² (1,255 km²) of land and water. There are nearly 200 miles (320 km) of trails for hikers to enjoy in Grand Teton National Park.

published by: hjaynefoster
Bryce Canyon National Park, is a national park located in southwestern Utah in the United States. Contained within the park is Bryce Canyon. Despite its name, this is not actually a canyon, but rather a giant natural amphitheater created by erosion along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Bryce is distinctive due to its geological structures, called hoodoos, formed from wind, water, and ice erosion of the river and lakebed sedimentary rocks. The red, orange and white colors of the rocks provide spectacular views to visitors.

It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to the diversity of its wildlife and undisturbed nature. It has a total area of 54,600 km² and is bigger than Costa Rica. Some of the typical animals of the savanna (for example elephants, hippopotami, African Wild Dog and crocodiles) can be found in this park in a larger numbers than in any other African park. Most of it is rarely visited by humans. Interesting places in the park include the river of Rufiji and the Stiegler, a canyon of 100 metres depth and 100 metres width. Around this canyon can be found most of the touristic facilities. In the Selous Reserve safari by foot is permitted. This type of exploration is forbidden in most other national parks of Africa.

Should you ever go to Glacier National Park, Avalanche Lake is entirely worth the hike (a couple miles if I remember right). Beautiful lake with several waterfalls running into it. We saw deer, geese, and ducks by it and one flying squirrel on the hike out there. The hike itself is quite lovely too.

USS Arizona
published by: clarkth
"There are three main parts to the national memorial: entry, assembly room, and shrine. At the entry, visitors pass one of the battleship's two bells. The central assembly room features seven large open windows on either wall and ceiling, to commemorate the date of the attack. It also contains an opening in the floor overlooking the sunken decks of the oil-seeping wreck. The shrine at the far end is a marble wall that bears the names of all those killed on the USS Arizona, protected behind velvet ropes. 'Wherein the structure sags in the center but stands strong and vigorous at the ends, expresses initial defeat and ultimate victory... The overall effect is one of serenity. Overtones of sadness have been omitted to permit the individual to contemplate his own personal responses... his innermost feelings.'"

"Spain saw the Georgia settlements as a threat to its interest in Florida. Spoiling for a fight, Oglethorpe returned to England in 1737 to raise troops for the war he knew was coming. A year later he was back in Georgia at the head of a 630-man regiment of British regulars, styled the 42d Regiment of Foot (Oglethorpe's). It was formed from a few hundred troops from Gibralter and most of the privates of a standing regiment in England, the 25th Foot."

National Park Drents Friese-Wold
published by: iahuis
There are several dozens of animals in the Drents-Friese Wold, used to graze the natural terrain. The Drenthe heath sheep for instance, eats branches from the common heather plant and keeps them short. Grass and young trees are not safe from these sheep either. This gives other heath plants some space. Elsewhere, in the Aekingerzand for instance, sheep saunter within fences, without a shepherd. These animals find their own food.

Shifting sands are on their way
Shifting sand areas came into existence within the heathlands. The heathlands were used so intensively that the plants stopped growing here. The shifting sands started to be blown about. By 1850 the shifting sands were so large that they provided an unlimited view over to Friesland. They turned into a serious threat for villages and fields. The first small-scale forestations to stop the sands from shifting were initiated around that time.

published by: marionly
The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, shared between Romania and Ukraine, is a labyrinth of water and land, made up of countless lakes, channels, islands at the end of a 2,860 km long river. The Danube Delta is the largest European wetland and reed bed, forming also Europe’s largest water purification system. The area is particularly well known for the abundance of birdlife: 312 important bird species are present in the Delta, which is an important stopover and breeding area for many bird species. About 90 fish species are found here, including populations of sturgeon. It is also one of the last refuges for the European mink, the wildcat, the freshwater otter and the globally threatened monk seal. The biosphere reserve was declared as Natural World Heritage in 1991.

Norfolk Broads - Hunsett Mill
published by: a90six
This drainage mill was built around 1860 and is a red-brick tower mill. The mill has a white boat shaped cap, sails and a fantail. The windpump once ran two scoop wheels. The tower had four patent sails. It was restored around 1970, along with the mill house, both of which are privately owned. It is probable that the pumping gear is still intact. Major damage was caused to the sails of the windmill in the Great storm of 1987, which resulted in one of the sails being completely replaced with wood specially shipped from Canada. On the 5th of May 2007 another storm caused the fan to be torn off the fanstage.

Norfolk Broads - Before the River Narrows
published by: a90six
The Norfolk Broads are a network of mostly navigable rivers and lakes, known locally as broads. The Broads, and some surrounding land was constituted as a special area with a level of protection similar to a UK National Park by The Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Act of 1988. The Broads Authority, a Special Statutory Authority responsible for managing the area, became operational in 1989.
The total area is 303km² (117ml²), most of which is in Norfolk, with over 200km (124ml) of navigable waterways. There are seven rivers and about fifty broads, mostly less than twelve feet deep. For many years the broads were thought to be natural features of the landscape. It was in the 1960s that Dr Joyce Lambert proved that they were artificial features, the effect of flooding on early peat excavations. The Romans first exploited the rich peat beds of the area for fuel, and in the Middle Ages the local monasteries dug the peat and sold it as fuel. They excavated some 320,000 tonnes of peat a year. Then the sea levels began to rise, and the pits began to flood. Despite the construction of windpumps and dykes, the flooding continued and resulted in the typical Broads landscape of today, with its reed beds, grazing marshes and wet woodland.

Three Sisters - Blue Mountains (Australia National Park)
published by: rfna70
The Legend ---
The Aboriginal dream-time legend has it that three sisters, 'Meehni', 'Wimlah' and Gunnedoo' lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe.
These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love with three brothers from the Nepean tribe, yet tribal law forbade them to marry.
The brothers were not happy to accept this law and so decided to use force to capture the three sisters causing a major tribal battle.
As the lives of the three sisters were seriously in danger, a witchdoctor from the Katoomba tribe took it upon himself to turn the three sisters into stone to protect them from any harm. While he had intended to reverse the spell when the battle was over, the witchdoctor himself was killed. As only he could reverse the spell to return the ladies to their former beauty, the sisters remain in their magnificent rock formation as a reminder of this battle for generations to come.

This is a south-facing view in what is probably Canada's most western-lying National Park, with some lingering morning mist in the background. To the north lie miles of endless surf pounding on the beach. To the right of this image, due west, is nothing but hundreds and hundreds of miles of ocean until you reach the nearest land - Japan. Appearing in my 'Favorites of 2007' album which I did not want to alter, this image has been uploaded again for the purpose of this Creative Challenge.

Combers Beach
published by: christianchen
Unique beach art - randomly fallen driftwood - adds some drama to Combers Beach, which lies several miles to the north of Wickaninnish Beach. Combers Beach, one of Pacific Rim National Park's official points of interest is now only accessible on foot, as the headland has been severely ravaged and altered by the force of erosion in a matter of a couple of decades, and all the parking lots close to shore have literally been washed away. This image is also found in a smaller resolution in my favorites of 2007 album.

The Parque Natural de Monfragüe is a Natural Park, north of Trujillo in Extremadura, Spain.
The park runs from east to west along the valley of the dammed River Tagus, and includes a long mountainous ridge. At the centre of the park the river has cut through this ridge, creating on the western side an impressive rock face, the Penafalcon. On the eastern side, a castle, Castillo Monfrague, is situated. The River Tietar enters the park from the north-east and joins the Tagus just to the east of Penafalcon.
Biodiversity: Habitats in the park include extensive dense scrub, small oak woodlands, and numerous cliffs and rock faces.
It is an outstanding site for raptors, with more than 15 regular breeding species, including the world's largest breeding concentration of Eurasian Black Vulture, a large population of Griffon Vulture, and several pairs of Spanish Imperial Eagle, Golden Eagle and Bonelli's Eagle.
Other breeding birds for which the park is important are Black Stork and Eurasian Eagle Owl and there is a high density of Azure-winged Magpie. It is also one of the few locations in Europe where White-rumped Swift breeds.
The reserve is also important for the Iberian Lynx.

Creus Cape (7 Dec 2oo7) 009
published by: wesmfmm
The Cap Creus is the last outlet of the Pyrenees and at the same time the most easterly point of the Iberian Peninsula on the map. That is one of the reasons why the Cap with its lighthouse is a particularly important point in the nautical charts... The Cap Creus since May 1998 declared as a nature reserve, lies by the sea as well as on land. By the sea the area begins at the land point of Bol Nou near the Cala Tamariu within the region of Port de la Selva and ends just before Roses at the land point of (kat. Punta) Falconera. The protected area on land covers an space of scarcely 90 hectares. Fauna and Flora are equally protected. This nature reserve is the only one in Spain, which covers sea and land at the same time; it contains the largest uninhabited area in the Spanish Mediterranean. The rocky coast which is barren and mainly consists of slate, is continually broken up by small bays. Fauna and Flora of the area are quite unique and comprise a variety of very rare species of sea-birds in danger of extinction. Winter is domineered by very strong northerly winds which continually hinder fishing and maritime traffic. Therefore the area around the Cap registers a very small environmental pollution and is renowned as underwater paradise for divers

What luck, I live 40 minutes from this view. Chinook Pass, WA. (elev. 5,430ft/ 1,655M) is located in the Cascade Mountain's high country (Mt. Rainier NP). Chinook boasts spectacular scenery, along it's winding road. The focal point is stunning views of Mt. Rainier, along the route. The pass opens for Summer in late May. Chinook Pass is closed during Winter season (Oct. - May). The snow gets too deep to maintain for safe travel. In late-May 10-15 feet of snow still remain. By July; the alpine meadows will be blanked with colorful wildflowers, instead of snow.

Cloudy Day at Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland
published by: faranya100
The oldest known European dwellings in North America were built by the Norsemen just a few days' sail from here. The history of human habitation dates back 5000 years to the Maritime Archaic Indian settlements, which predated those of contemporary Native Canadians. Inuit from the Arctic also resided in the area in past centuries. Sadly, almost all traces of their presence have long since vanished. European explorers such as the French, led by John Cabot, also plied the waters along the coast. The sheer slopes speak of past continental collisions. I've chosen to depict the meadows and steep mountainous terrain instead of the more common seaside shots. Fullsize works best.

It is roughly 135 miles long and includes nearly 95,000 acres of public land. Canoeing is a popular activity along the river especially in the spring. Remember the story of Theseus and the Minotaur in Crete (the bull in the labyrinth to whom Athenian youth were sacrificed)? Upon his return home after defeating the Minotaur, Theseus was supposed to switch the sails on his ship from black to white, signifying victory. According to legend, Theseus unfortunately "forgot," and when his father, King Aegeus saw the black sails, legend has it that he threw himself to his death ... possibly from this very spot on the hill at Cape Sounion ... thus making Theseus the new king.

Seen here in the crystal morning sunlight, in all it's austere majesty ... I give you The Temple of Poseidon. Go ahead and put this baby on full size!!! According to ancient Greek mythology, Poseidon and Athena, goddess of wisdom, were competing for the love of the people in the area of the Acropolis. It was decided that whoever created the most useful object would win the right to have the city named for them. Poseidon created horses, but Athena created the olive, and so the capital of Greece is Athens.

The Temple of Poseidon was constructed in the Doric style in the 5th century B.C., on the site of previous temples. In Ancient Greece, Poseidon, god of the sea, was pictured as an older man with a beard, generally carrying a trident (3-pronged spear), seashells and other marine life. He was credited with the creation of all sea life as well as of horses (zebras, too... one of his earlier efforts). Additionally, Poseidon was believed to be the force behind earthquakes.

Lake Louise -- This place always inspires me each time I visit. It is considered Canada's "Diamond in the Wilderness," and the "Hiking Capital of Canada". The region abounds with spectacular scenery, from glaciers to waterfalls...."The longer I live the more beautiful life becomes.
If you...ignore beauty, you will soon find yourself without it.
Your life will be impoverished. But if you invest in beauty,
it will remain with you all the days of your life."

Golubac, probably built in the 14th century, guards the entrance to the Iron Gate gorge from high cliffs overlooking the Danube. It was held, in turn, by Prince Lazar, Despot Stefan and Despot Djuradj. The fortress has seven tall towers. Despite the many times it has been the scene of battles, Golubac is still comparatively well-preserved and represents one of the finest medieval fortresses in the country.

Monument Valley is located on the Arizona-Utah border on the Navajo reservation. It is located within the first Navajo Tribal Park a designation equivalent to a U.S. National Park. This image was originally captured on film in 1983 and scanned as a digital image. Because it is a little remote, it does not see the number of tourists that visit the Grand Canyon. In my humble opinion, it is far more awe inspiring. A number of movies have been filmed in the valley and more car commercials than I can count.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
published by: sharonmyphotos
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison, located in Colorado, is one of the United States' newest national parks; its status changed from monument to park on October 21, 1999. Its unique and spectacular landscape was formed slowly by the action of water and rock scouring down through hard Proterozoic crystalline rock. No other canyon in North America combines the narrow opening, sheer walls, and startling depths offered by the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The river is the Gunnison River. P1010210

Glenmont property where the remains of Edison and his wife are also buried is maintained by the US National Park Service as the Edison National Historic Site. This is the gorgeous ceiling in the den. It is a painting by Virgilio Torjetti. It shows two women, one playing a harp and one holding an open book. It was completed in 1890 and represents both music and science, to honor Edison's invention of the phonograph.

Crater Lake Glory - Crater Lake National Park Oregon

Crater Lake - Like No Place Else on Earth
Crater Lake has inspired people for hundreds of years. No place else on earth combines a deep, pure lake, so blue in color; sheer surrounding cliffs, almost two thousand feet high; two picturesque islands; and a violent volcanic past. It is a place of immeasurable beauty, and an outstanding outdoor laboratory and classroom.
Crater Lake is located in Southern Oregon on the crest of the Cascade Mountain range, 100 miles (160 km) east of the Pacific Ocean. It lies inside a caldera, or volcanic basin, created when the 12,000 foot (3,660 meter) high Mount Mazama collapsed 7,700 years ago following a large eruption.
Generous amounts of winter snow, averaging 533 inches (1,354 cm) per year, supply the lake with water. There are no inlets or outlets to the lake. Crater Lake, at 1,943 feet (592 meters) deep, is the seventh deepest lake in the world and the deepest in the United States. Evaporation and seepage prevent the lake from becoming any deeper.(Source National park Service)
