Occasionally the the air above my yard is used by more than just the birds.

Taken while riding 60mph down a major highway. I started panning as we came up to it, and was almost turned around backwards in my car seat by the time the shutter opened.

I stopped her relaxed look at a speed of about 50 MPH. The blur in front is tall grass on the side of the road. A rock cliff is in the background. I deleted a couple numbers off the tag so it could not be identified. You only get one chance at this speed.

During our model shoot a wave came upon us quickly. Erica's face remained clear as the wave was caught moving in.

This pelican was skimming the water on its never ending search for food.

This Hummingbird was hard to capture because of its elusive behavior when it comes to the feeder. Small hummers, like this, will beat their wings about 55 times per second. Normal flight speed is about an impressive 25 MPH!

I dont know if this is panning, but hey its worth a shot.

Blue Heron Of The Amable Du Fond River Algonquin Park

I took this photo going about 60 miles per hour on the way to Bend, Oregon. (Don't worry, my dad was driving!) While nothing in it came out clear, I'm pretty amazed that panning let any of it even be recognizable since the rest of my photos were just brown blurs. I like the spooky, horror movie quality of the dead trees in the foreground.

Trying to catch the moment during an ice-skating performance turns out to be incredibly difficult - but the blurred effect shows the speed at which they move and the panned background adds nice colour

I took perhaps 150 panned shots at the F1 at Magny Cours in France and only managed to get 2 which were stop action with a blurred background/foreground! It really is difficult to do. The cars are so incredibly fast that by the time you think you've got the pan in hand the car isn't in the picture anymore!

Alonso/Piquet jr. This panned shot really shows the speed involved, my panning technique is really non-existant - but I liked the way this one turned out anyway!

I was driving to South Carolina at 65MPH and saw a sign I wanted...panning while driving alone, NOT a good idea.

Ok so panning requires fast action, right? Simon told me he was super fast! Aren't I good ? :-)

In Falkland Islands, we visited an Albatros colony, which is a "Rockhopper penguin Rockery as well. This Rockhopper penguin came towards us, and I shot this picture of the penguin shaking his head. This picture was taken from a fast moving small boat. The table mountains and their reflection can be seen through the vail of water that is left by the boat.

All of my posts this week were taken at Oak Hammock Marsh, just minutes away north, of Winnipeg. This marsh is also the home of Canadian Division of Ducks Unlimited...This pair of Canada Geese were coming in for a landing in the open field next to the marsh. Migration is a miracle. By land, air and water, millions of birds do it, in time with the seasons. Most of our birds, approximately 90%, do not spend the winter here. They migrate farther south, anywhere from the southern United States to the south tip of South America. Oak Hammock Marsh is an important staging area for hundreds of thousands of ducks and geese and for many other species. It is a safe protected area for the birds to stop and eat, building up fat reserves before starting the next leg of their journey.
