Summer in Australia 2008. The day the sun came out, it was a welcome relief after five days of rain, you can see the remains of the storm moving away to the east, the thing that fascinated me about this image is the perspective, the warning flag is higher than the "Q deck" the highest residential building in the world.

We saw this amazing fig tree in Queensland Australia. The idea of this photo is to show the size of the tree by giving a "sense of scale". Tha width of the "Curtain Fig Tree", as it is called, is 14 meters, and the hight of the root sistem is 15 meters.

The seal in the front looks much bigger than he is, because he is closer to the camera than the penguing in the back.

Wax Museum of Madam Tussaud, Las Vegas. Sometimes contrasts are funny, aren't they?:) I wonder how it feels to be so BIG:)) These statues are made in real size. More than 200 dimensions are taken from each person to make his/her wax statue.

At the mouth of the Columbia River in Washington state sits this wonderful lighthouse that stands as a sentry to ships who enter the waters of the river. This oldie but goodie slide shot was well thought out. I asked my mother to wear the red jacket so she would stand out against the blue water and communicating by walkie talkie I asked her to remain in position so I could get this photo that shows very well the Scale of this lighthouse.

A balloon launched from farther down the valley is just barely visible above this nearly inflated balloon. Just how far away is it? Because the horizontal partially inflated balloon is the same size as the one far away, it is the sense of scale that allows the eye to judge the distance.

A Tree Hairy Guy

This very large door is representative of the massive size of the buildings in the forbidden city. The three men in uniform were photographed to give a sense of scale to the door and what looks to be a base moulding of the main building. The entire complex is huge and constructed at a scale that is understandable only when one visits.

This cute little frog was in the basket of our pool skimmer. When I tried to release it near the garden he hopped right back into the pool. I tried several times but he kept jumping out of my hands so I went to grab my camera, put him on our Springfloat mattress, and started taking pictures! I put the goggles behind him so you could get an idea of how small he was.

If you look at the hikers compared to Mt. Rainier, it appears as though the mountain is less than 100 feet tall. In actuality, it is miles away and is 14,410 feet tall, the tallest mountain in the contiguous 48 states. The path to paradise - Paradise, Mt. Rainier National Park - if you love to hike, this park has the most amazing hiking trails you'll ever find, with breathtaking views of Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Adams. In August the wildflowers are blooming and in the fall the colors are amazing.

When you are traveling along on this road in Oregon you come around a curve and Mt. Hood is there.

He was so proud of his find, I had to find a very small skillet (about 6 inches across) and fry it for him, He took it to school for his lunch the next day.

Must be viewed full size to appreciate it's detail. This is a shot of the Las Vegas strip from the viewing deck of the Paris Hotel's 1/2 scale Eiffel Tower. I used a Photoshop filter called Polar Coordinates to create this perspective. Everything about Las Vegas is on an over the top sense of scale and once you're there, you can't help but be sucked into the vortex of it's outrageous charm...hence the title "Vegas Vortex".

This lighthouse has been relocated and rebuilt several times. Wars, storms and an earthquake are the causes for this.

This monument is outside the Alamo. You can see the gentleman standing at the base of it showing clearly how small he looks standing next to it and I think a good example of the challenge here of 'scale'. This is interesting. The sunset was really beautiful that evening.I hadn't been home to CA for 3 years or so. I was with my niece and we took a drive and I told her I wanted to stop at some of the coastal spots at sunset to take some pictures. This one I wanted her profile with the light house in the background. The 'Big Mama' dune is a favourite dune for the climbers as can be seen from the number of people on the top. The slope of the dune changes with the wind. Wind continuously reshapes the patterns of the huge dunes of the Namib desert. It timelessly forces the grains of sand on the flat windward slope upwards to the crest of the dune. Here they fall down in the wind shade. The leeward slope is therefore always considerably steeper than the windward side.

On our way from Sossusvlei to Damaraland, our pilot flew the small aircraft just above the dunes for us to get a good look from the air and take photographs like this one. Zoomed to full size one can make out the car park at the end of the dunes.

I actually did a perfect split at my age,lol!!

The walk around the rim of the San Antonio volcano is a highlight of the area and takes around 20 minutes. The crater has a circumference of about 1km and a depth of roughly 100m, making it one of the largest craters on La Palma. This cone last blew in 1949, and today it's looking relatively sedate with Canary pines establishing themselves precariously on the slopes and the base.

The celebrated architect Richard Morris Hunt modeled the house on three châteaux built in 16th-century France. It would feature 4 acres of floor space, 250 rooms, 34 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, and 65 fireplaces. The basement alone would house a swimming pool, gymnasium and changing rooms, bowling alley, servants' quarters, kitchens, and more.

David Rogers' Big Bugs! At the entrance to the Visitor Center, you'll be welcomed by a Praying Mantis. Twelve other larger-than-life bugs surround Meadow Lake or float in its waters. The sculptures are created using various combinations of whole trees found standing or fallen dead, cut green saplings selectively harvested from the willow family, dry branches, and other forest materials. The inherent uniqueness of these materials: their different shapes, colors and textures provide these sculptures with character, definition, and a sense of motion. Since its debut in 1994 at the Dallas Arboretum, the Big Bugs exhibit has traveled all across the USA.

A quiet Sunday morning stand up paddling on the Anahulu River with Rainbow Bridge and the marina in the distance. Hale'iwa town is a very laid back place that offers simple pleasures. This photograph was taken from a bridge on the Joseph P. Leong Highway that bypasses Hale'iwa town.

With the ships shadow, this shows the scale of the iceberg better than the shadow photo in the other album. My guess is that this iceberg contained 10 million cubic meters of ice, thats a lot of water!

One of my absolute favourite photos of my wife and son, taken after I had not seen them for 2 months. I hadn't thought it would be a controversial shot, but as many people dislike it as like it. [I know this doesn't qualify for the challenge because of the vertical orientation, but it fit the terms so well, plus I love it]

This National Historic Landmark is a 175 foot lighthouse that has been fully restored. This lighthouse is located just south of Daytona Beach in the state of Florida.

This actually shows a false sense of scale. This is a big rock, but since it is much closer to the camera the the kids on the beach it appears even bigger.

World's largest spruce tree. 58'-11" in circumference, 191' tall, over 1000 years old.

On a recent bckpacking trip some of the kids decided to go swimming in this mountain lake. It is glacier fed so the water is really cold, even in the shallows. I'm not sure how much this demonstrates a sense of scale, but it is scenic and gives an idea of the size of the lake and the mountain in the background.

Just as I was turning away from the Canyon to catch my bus, I spied this critter balancing on the tree branch surveying the scene with the same amount of reverene and awe that I had!

Not sure this is really a statement on scale so much as perspective, but I like this picture. This is a hallway off the courtyard of the El Convento Hotel in Old San Juan.

This photo was featured some time ago in WS and I am thrilled Jessica elected to feature it again. It is downloaded quite a bit by WS members. My children were at the top waving to me. I wisely informed them that I needed to be at the bottom to take their picture. Please comment that you can see them waving to validate my excuse. :) On the extreme left of the pyramid you can see the scaled back of the stonework rising from bottom to top. During each equinox, sunlight will illuminate these scales in just the right fashion so that it appears to be the back of a serpent descending from the heavens to the earth. At the bottom of the pyramid is what appears as a serpent's head. This is a major tenent of the Mayan religion and proves their mathematical ability as well. Each of the four faces of the pyramid has a stairway with 91 steps. With the addition of a shared step forming a platform at the top, this totals 365, or the number of days in a year. Additionally, when you look at the western face during the winter solstice, the sun appears to climb up the edge of the staircase until it rests momentarily directly above the temple before beginning its descent down the other side. Search the internet for a photo of this structure taken at just the right time during the equinox and you will understand the magnitude of Mayan mathematical ability. I credit my WS friends YAIR, RAN and MARIA for the inspiration needed to see and feel the emotion a photo can evoke.

There is a story behind this shot. It was originally shot on film. My wife and children were terribly bored as I continually stopped to take one photo after another in the park. Finally, she put her foot down and said no more stopping, its time to go to the hotel. As a consequence, believe it or not, this photo was shot out of the open window of a moving car. My recollection is that we had slowed to about 30 m.p.h at the time I snapped the shutter. The people in the photo lend some scale to the size of these rocks and the cloud was just a bit of luck.

This thistle pose presented itself on a sidewalk in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Regal.

The devastating volcanic eruption in 1871 wiped out the Spanish settlement of Catarman that was established in 1697. Skogarfoss is one of the biggest and most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland with a width of 25m and a drop of 60m. One can get an idea of scale looking at the two people standing at the foot of the falls.

this shot made me smile when I saw it at home afterwards. The proportions were a bit odd but look at the person lying on the beach, almost looks like a victim, and the guy is running away. I was at the top of the cliff and the bird was a lot closer to me than the people on the beach.

Concrete castle ,Bonsai trees 10 to 25 yrs old . Has a 3 feet long chime bell that hangs down the middle half way into the ground . It gives a spooky far away church bell sound when the wind blows in just the right direction

Exploring and photographing the wind farms

George walking past some caves after we walked under the waterfalls at Silver Falls, in Oregon. This is an amazing area that has walking paths that go right behind the fall.

This building was constructed in the 13th & early 14th centuries. The most noticable feature of this church is the spire - 65m (212 ft)which dominates the area even though the church lies at the bottom of a valley.

By applying the false sense of scale, I intended to show off the beauty of the Queen Anne's lace against the wildflower meadow. (ps1858-289k)

In order to show how small this bird's nest is, I set my coffee mug next to it. From watching the birds in my backyard, I assume, that this is the nest of the American Redstarts. A rainstorm had knocked it down. The little ones had already gone off on their own. The nest was woven of dry grass and birch bark and looks pretty neat! Please see full size! The broken egg I found the next day. It is a robin's egg. I added it for color. The American Redstarts' eggs would have been smaller and of a different color. (ps1942-439k)

Takes up alot of real eastate doesn't it, a most magnificent Balloon. Raising to the occasion. Albuquerque Invitational Balloon Fiesta 2007.

Roughly this special shape is amoung the largest, nearing 120 feet in length and 80 foot in height, massive size, it can be seen for many miles when aloft!

Look at that left side. Those black spots aren't rocks, but penguins at play. Observers, shivering from afar, are reminded that icebergs are 95% underwater! Yes, this is really, really BIG!

I found this old razorblade fence up at Kuneitra on the Golan Heights. A place where you look down on Syria on one side - and down on the Sea of Galilee on this side. I took the shot lying on the ground facing the camera up.

‘No word shall disturb this beautiful moment’ A picture taken at times of the war in summer 2006. I went to the beach to sort my mind. The air was full of noise from aircrafts, but suddenly it was still - inside.

Either the hand is very big or the feet are very small. I think both is right!

Without the pen, you'd have no sense of scale. It's called a hickory horned devil.

St. Louis Arch. Not only one of the most impressive structures in America, it's also a work of art.

This is our cruiseship docked next to a ship from another company. Even though our ship was not literally larger than the boat next to us, it appears that way. The true scale is measured by the people walking to the ramps to board. These ships were indeed GINORMOUS!

This photo is taken in Newport Harbor. The ships are normal size, but the Pell bridge which is HUGE looks small in the background. It is actually so large these ships can easily pass under it.

Lookout Mountain, Alabama....the glasses of wine give you an idea how high up and large the mountains are.

This young woman looks small at the bottom of the Forty Steps which are part of the Cliff Walk in Newport Rhode Island. At the end of Narragansett Ave., about 3/4ths of a mile south from Memorial Boulevard, are the Forty Steps ... a dramatic stone staircase that drops about 2/3rds of the way down the side of the cliff to a balcony over the sea. Yes they are this steep and yes they are as dramatic as they appear in this photo.

In the town next to ours there is a home where outside there are two models of Star Wars Space ships. Many years ago when I worked a part time job in this town my boss took me to show me this house and told me that the owner had worked on the Star Wars movies and these were models he had created that were used during the filming of the New Hope movie. This star ship is mounted in his front yard. This is the Imperial Star Destroyer which of course in the movie is HUGE - known for its massive size and overwhelming firepower. We all know they use special effects in movies but to see the model and how small it is in actuality is something else. This house also has a TIE fighter in the backyard with Darth Vadar at the helm!

The massive Tappan Zee looks tiny here as viewed from atop a hill in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery at sunset. The Tappan Zee Bridge is a cantilever bridge in New York crossing over the Hudson River at its widest point. The total length of the bridge and approaches is 16,013 feet (just over 3 miles, 4.881 km).

These huge boulders line the top of the mountain near my home. It is a popular place for hiking.

The little twist bush at the base gives size to this strage hoodoo! USA Nevada Cathedral Gorge State Park.

The trees at its base give the huge size of this great natural wonder! One of the world's most fascinating sudden discovery for me from that overlook and it is our third trip there; The visit of the canyon on the grounfloor may be very interesting too but we need to have a special permit from Indian authorities to go there! USA Arizona Canyon de Chelly National Monument.

The explanation panel at the base gives size! What can be the weigh of this big finger standing alone in the desert? Mother Nature will always amaze us!!! There are 70 monolithic sedimentary spires in the Sate Park reaching 170 feet in height (50m); The high colors of some rocks contrasting strongly with a very blue sky prompted the National Geographic Society in 1949, with the consent of Kodack Film Corp., to name the park Kodachrome Basin; USA Utah Kodachrome Basin State Park.

One of the most beautiful sights in Yosemite National Park, the falls is visible throught the trees from the path leading to it, then it breaks unforgettibly onto your sight.

The Hanging Valley seems to hang from the cliffs and from it comes the Yosemite Falls plunge. The distance can be judged by seeing the closer trees framing the picture and comparing them to the trees on top of the cliff.

We saw this old relic of a tree with a hole in it, just a peek-a-boo spot which made a great shot of Yosemite National Park.

Chevy Astro drives through the drive through tree. At one time Redwoods covered most the earth. The Ice Age destroyed most of them, except those of the Coast and Sierra Nevada. This tree is 2400 years old!

A powerful statement in the sand...

These boots used to be part of a gas station (built in 1954) just south of downtown Seattle in the neighborhood of Georgetown. The matching Cowboy hat (not restored yet) was the station office and the Boots were the restrooms (big boot-mens and small boot-womens). These were moved from the gas station location on East Marginal Way to a small neighborhood park to preserve them from demolition.

Beautiful mountains of Wyoming..gotta love the spaciousness.

Welcome to Colonial National Historical Park, which contains Yorktown Battlefield and Jamestown Island. On the battlefield in front of you, George Washington's victory over Charles Cornwallis in 1781 signaled the end of the American Revolution and secured independence for the United States of America. This park encompasses the battlefield, French and American encampment areas and portions of Yorktown used by the British.

Out on a one lane dirt road, I caught this rural school bus I passed in my rear view mirror (Oakesdale School Dist. #324, near Oakesdale, WA). See my Trip to Palouse albums.

Love kept staring at the top of this old oak tree limb that fell in the front yard. Not sure what she was seeing, but whatever it was, she wanted it.

While I was visiting my sweet neighbor (84 year old widow), I took some photos of butterflies around her zinnas.

This is an old tree stump in my yard and an old bottle that I found.

My daughter Savannah and I got a kick out of these large game pieces. We spent quite awhile playing around with them.

That's one big fountain. I had taken another picture with my daughter in the shot, which I was going to use for the creative challenge, then realized it was vertical and chose this picture instead.

Today I was picking up the apples that had fallen to the ground and throwing them to the horses...when I found this one. I've never actually seen a worm half way out of an apple like this...and particularly don't care to experience it again. It quickly retreated back into the apple after I took this shot. Yuck!

This is badly creased, and I haven't learned how to fix it properly yet, but I felt that it showed a sense of scale. (Might not be eligible though)

One would never know this was a miniature unless you notice the sprinkler hose. The small trees look like big ones.

False sense of scale: the statue is much smaller than the building in background. Michael the Brave (1558-9 August 1601) was the Prince of Wallachia (1593-1601), of Transylvania (1599-1600), and of Moldavia (1600) three principalities that he united under his rule.

This monument is a real boat propeller,but it isn't taller than the building.

All the dots you see are barns (best seen full size) - makes you realize how big of area you can see!

My son was fascinated by this large Luna Moth he found.

See the tiny shape of the flying bird twoards the middle? That also tells you a bit about the tremendous size of the lighthouse!

For a little Christmas in July- using the backdrop of the building as a guide, you can really tell how huge this tree is!

Location: Peniche, with the Berlenga island in the background - Portugal (this is a cropped version of the main picture posted earlier in this gallery). The waxing crescent moon's about to set behind the Berlenga Island. Contemplating such a magnificent scene makes our mind fly away and dream... and makes us wonder how beautiful and fragile our planet is. Fortunately there was this guy that was also paralised with such beauty and I could make a long exposure to catch the moment with the camera on the tripod. The Berlenga Island lies about 13Km from mainland in the western coast of Portugal. Very recently two guys swam across the channel between the island and Peniche city, in the Carvoeiro Cape. This picture was taken a few weeks before this brave accomplishment. Maybe this is one of the swimmers, dreaming about the fact that it was possible to swim such a long distance against all the elements of the rough seas. If that is so, it's a great example that nothing magnificent happens if you don't dream about it.

Oottupura' in Malayalam means "feeding/dining hall". Traditionally, Oottupuras are associated with temples where free meals are served to all devotees. In Kerala, big temples like Guruvayoor,Vaikom and Ettomanoor still have spacious oottupuras situated in the temple premises serving a large number of people daily.

This is a composite of two images. Because of the low depth of field I got using 300mm telephoto I took one shot of the grasses in focus and one of the moon in focus, layered them and masked out everything but the grass in the upper layer. It is a fairly crude effort despite all the time it took because I also had to clone out the out of focus grass in the moon focused shot which left lots of visible artifacts. The images also didn't line up properly because this wasn't the original intention when shooting and the shots were handheld in rapidly changing light.

This is one of the calfs born back in March-- already he is quite big even though he is only a few months old!
