This site, on Cape Forchu near the Yarmouth Light (NS), has been the scene of several drownings. Two of those lost were my former students. When the seas are high, breakers pound the rocks and spectators can be literally wrenched off their feet. In this shot, the ocean in the background looks peaceful. However, the closer body of water is a tidepool flung by spray, so you will see how far the rogue waves can reach. Best viewed full size.

For this assignment, I was asked to take pictures of people's hands. My concern is for the plight of these persons living on the street and in some small measure, it is a comfort to them that their faces are NOT shown. This image is of a woman wearing a red shirt, a long black skirt & notice, her fingernails are clean and well kept. But her face could belong to anyone of us in a blink of an eye.

Historic Route 66 "Get Your Kicks on Route 66" It was the Mother Road, that traveled from California to Chicago. Route 66 was officially dedicated in 1926.

MR. D'z Route 66 Diner is a modern rendition of a 1950's diner that you would find all along Route 66. Tuesday night is "cruising night" where you will find motorcycles, hot rods, and old vintage automobiles at this lovely diner. Also, did I mention this little diner was featured on Oprah, she served her audience on the Oprah show Mr. D'z root bear.

Amusing graffiti on an otherwise common road sign warning drivers that cows may be on the road ahead (the sign was on a narrow, winding lane).

Almost exactly 20 years ago (15/16th October 1987) the Great Storm hit South East England. The damage was visible in the morning light. Trees had been uprooted everywhere, roofs had been ripped off, roads were closed, windows were broken, cars were overturned or crushed by trees or walls, and toppling trees had ripped up the pavements with their roots. It later emerged that the South East had lost 90% of its trees in just a few hours. It was all quite grim............then I came across this sign at a Bed and Breakfast on the battered Seafront Promenade and the irony and/or sheer optimism of it just made me smile....................

Hog's Breath Inn the mist! The ever famous fog that rolls through Carmel made this photo a little misty, but I still loved this sign of the restaurant that Clint Eastwood created. The restaurant is charming and the food is fabulous! I am certain there must be a story behind this name. Anybody know?

This is one of my many signs that I make.

Walking through the "moonscape" of the lava flows on Hawaii in 2005 came upon this sign. It completely cracked me up. In response to a few comments. The sign was definitely IN the lava, not place later. There was a tiny patch of asphalt not visible in the picture next to the sign. This kind of lava won't actually melt the pole. It was amazingly light. Vulcanologists use metal coffee cans to scoop the stuff up for analysis.

Apollonia is located on a cliff that stretches the length of the Sharon coast. At the top of the cliff, high above people settled some 2500 years ago. Thus began the fascinating story of Apollonia. Many rulers ruled here and build over the time a town, a fortress and a harbor. Today there are only ruins. This sign at the entry shows 3 Fleur-de-lis. Maybe as symbol of one of former rulers at Apollonia?

Huricane Charley demolished a whole tailer park in Punta Gorda Florida and it was bull dozed to the side of the road. The road was lined with rubble for nearly a half a mile. Just across the street was Taylor Funeral Home's sign for parking, quite a reminder of the lives that were changed forever.

April 24, 2007 - My section had a fun day and took some pics. One of the best is SGT Chatwin posing by our dry erase board. He made up the quote for the day. I had to send this out, it's priceless. The weather has started to heat up and we have officially kicked on A/Cs . It's been almost 9 months since the warm/hot weather changed to cooler temps. I forgot how blazing hot it gets here. The temps have started to reach into the 80s now and we are all feeling it. Going to have to get reacclimatized to the dry heat all over again, go through the same agony. With the warm, dry weather comes the dust and the flys which we did not miss that at all. The dust storms have really kicked up lately, we are coming into the "120-day winds" time and it is proving to be as dusty as last year.

My mom and I could not get over this sign. It was on the life guard chair on First beach in Newport, Rhode Island. The creek you are supposed to stay out of is the Atlantic Ocean!!!!

I found this unusual sign in a large cemetery in Newport, Rhode Island. It impressed me that these folks were honored this way, but some of the instructions to tourists amazed me - do not rub the gravestones or sit on them- would people do that? Amazing piece of history and long awaited honor. One of the roads that this cemetery is on - which is a main street is Farewell Street - no lie, see the sign in the next frame.

Passengers on the Cat ferry from Maine are its intended viewers, as they see this welcome message when the ship passes on its way into port. The sign is located at the Yarmouth Light on Cape Forchu, a granite headland at the mouth of the harbor.

Yes there really is a Shades of Death Road in NJ. You can find more about it in my album for Jenny Jump State Park. I took a lovely vertical shot of one of the road markers I love - this photo is a crop of that one as I try to make it horizontal so I can enter in the challenge. Hope I do not crop it so much it loses its mystique and quality. I wanted to try to keep the unusual tree in the upper part of the photo. My daughter says it is not good anymore but I will enter it anyway since it is an old and unusual street sign, and haven't see too many STREET name signs in the challenge yet. Many of us know the story of Lizzie Borden who possibly murdered by axing her father and stepmother to death. The historic home where they lived and the murder happened, 92 Second street, Fall River MASS is a Bread and Breakfast Inn now. It just strikes me funny to see the Lizzie Borden in big letters and the vacancy sign and WELCOME. I just envision a dark spector holding an ax over your head - welcome indeed!!! I have an album of photos from this visit to this house if you are interested in seeing them. I JUST saw on the Travel channel the top 10 most creepiest destinations to visit and number 1 was Lizzie Borden's Bread and Breakfast!!! No lie!!! enjoy - and early Happy Halloween................

These signs are a dual tribute to a local hero Rick Hansen. The Man In Motion World Tour was to raise money for spinal chord research and to create awareness of people with disabilities. Thermal Drive on the Port Moody / Coquitlam Municipality border was reportedly a steeper, more demanding uphill grade than the Great Wall of China, both of which Rick Hansen mastered in a wheelchair during his World tour in 1997. On the 10th Anniversary of his journey Rick once again mastered Thermal Drive in his wheelchair - a true athlete and a man with a heart of gold.

This just cracks me up. In my whole life, I have never seen fish roadkill. No little fishy crossing guards with dripping wet flags. Never. The stream goes UNDER the road, and the fish swim there in perfect safety. What is it about this event that I need to know while I'm driving down the road?
