Sheer concentration on the riders face. Yes.. a clear round. This was the wining stallion, what a magnificent animal! Bravo!

They might be small but they were very almost flying (look at that mane)and able to take corners like this one at breakneck speed. Very serious time trial in the competition, as you can see by the face of the driver and the way the passenger is literally hanging on. Photo taken early evening, even the angle of the shdow from the stadium seems to add to the inertia.

These four-legged athletes took Sydney by storm when they made their debut at the 2003 Show. These small pink pigs delighted Show-goers both young and old. The announcer divides the crowd into 4 colours and we all cheer the appropriate colour... an amazing site and the pigs seem to really enjoy it. They are the most popular race at the annual show

Woodchopping competition is a proud family tradition. In 1899 The Show's first woodchopping event was held in a paddock that doubled as a cattle judging ring. By 1908 they became the first Commonwealth Championships for woodchopping In 1938 The ring was constructed and axes were standardised, having a 75cm handle and single bladed head weighing 2 to 3 kilos. Axes are very, very sharp.

Tent pegging is a serious competition, at least is here in Australia and very popular with the mounted police and army. This shot was taken the instant before they lanced the pegs. You have to appreciate the speed they are approaching at, read on?.4 similarly uniformed mounted competitors armed with lances 2.5 m - 2.75 metres in length. Pegs are 30 cm long 7.5 cm wide, painted white identified with the rider number on the reverse side if practicable. Pegs are placed in the ground 1.5 metres distance from each other in single file and 2.5 metres intervals in four abreast.. The riders MUST be at full gallop, at the 40 metres gallop marker and maintained by all riders until reaching the 40 metres marker. Each member shall retain their numerical position in the Section throughout the contest.

This was Barbaro's last winning race (he won them all - up till he got hurt in the Preakness). Those of us who loved seeing him win - especially Ky Derby fans - will cherish his memory for a long time to come, and wonder what the future might have held for him - had his tragic injury not occurred

UK - Florida Atlantic 2007 game. What's remarkable about this shot (look at it in full size) is that I was in the upper deck of Commonwealth Stadium and the TD was across the field - yet the action is clearly stopped!

Curren was born in Santa Barbara, California and achieved near-mythical status both for his competitive drive and for his smooth, powerful surfing style.
