Any sounds were muted by a heavy blanket of clouds as snow fell throughout the day.There was very little color,just shades of gray and the relentless white of the snow,so a black & white snapshot was in order.

This is about as close to cold as I want to get! In Orlando they have what is called the ICE! show. It consists of very large ice sculptures, kept in a tent that stays 9 degrees farenheight. It's not easy keeping this much ice cold in Florida. Here is my daughter posing with one of the ice sculptures. She is wearing one of the parkas they hand out to help stay warm.

Was wearing 3 shirts, a jacket, a parka, and 2 pair of socks, then taking at least 3 hours to feel normal again, worth taking this shot?

Frozen frosty roads protected from the sun by the mountain side became a traffic hazard as the frost lasted well into the day.

This picture is taken from the window of a bus traveling in avalanche prone mountains in Southern New Zealand. This road was closed the previous week as it was being cleared from a preset avalanche.

Ice boating is a hit or miss sport. Winter 2007 was perfect. Thick ice and no snow. If it snows early there is no ice boating. When there is ice, the boats just fly. They can go 60 mph on a windy day. They skate on three blades.

We had a beautiful weekend of hiking on the north shore of Lake Superior with friends. There was no snow, but the rivers had a mix of ice and water, which was very beautiful. These were taken the weekend after Thanksgiving, 2007.

Due to severe blizzard conditions, the search for the missing Mammoth Mountain skier was called off this morning. Reports of a large bird in the area are raising concerns. Film at 11.

A snow storm came up while we were going over Monarch Pass in Colorado and the trees being covered in snow were so beautiful I just had to get out a take a photo of them.

From here also looking south you have a birds eye look of the Lake.Captured this from the deck after the blizzard the day and night before, woke up in the morning and saw this beautiful view of Diamond Peak Ski and the houses across the street from us. Of course we also had to dig out, the snow drift was 5 ft.high in front of our door.

At this time of year this small lake is usually frozen over. The summer trail crosses the lake and traverses a hill to pick up altitude, but we decided on a more direct route that was steeper.

Right, a challenge for the end of the year! I spotted this and thought: get the camera out... no one will ever figure out what it is if you shoot it like that. So: The challenge is on! === UPDATE: Hmmm, looks like that one wasn't as hard as I thought. Many of you were right: Frost it is! However, the actual thing was not guessed (luckily!). The little white towers are ice crystals stacked on top of each other. The whole is sitting on top of a low wall. What had happened was that very heavy fog (visibility of less than 30 ft) had moved in - and then the temperature dropped to about -10C. So the fog's drops froze into little ice crystals that covered every surface and were, in places, up to an inch high.

In the chilly morning air, a female cardinal is looking for seeds that may have fallen onto the snowy juniper on such a beautiful sunny winter day.

The snow-capped peaks fill the aquifer so that the windmill may pump the water back to the surface and quench the thirst of roaming cattle.

On a peaceful, serene, early winter morning, a stunning sunrise rises in the distance over looking snow laiden farmer's fields and woods. A gorgeous view from our back deck.

On a lightly snowing early morning a young bird looking eastward while perching on a crabapple branch just 7 feet away from my kitchen window.

Winter in the Puget Sound (Washington State) is usually mild. This year there has been more snow. The biggest sign of winter are the trees, barren and silent, waiting for the warmth of spring.

Love the sedum hair and pink accessories.

This tree died in a fire the previous year before I shot this image, but it is forever memoralized to me in this winter shot. Of so many of my photos, this is one of my favorites.

I know it is not a snow shot, but being a prejudiced grandmother, I love this baby! And so do mom and dad, as this shot displays. Winter means Christmas!

With the little snow fall on the tree branches, it looks like each branch is outlined with the night light in the background to spotlight on it, the greenish tint on the snowfall on the ground is beautiful. I like my little bit of snow!

Just about every Sunday morning Tom and I go out for breakfast and then drive around. I think he likes to humor me because I enjoy taking photographs. Doesn't matter the weather....we just go!!!

There is nothing any more beautiful than watching children and pets playing in the snow. Clint, April and Roxy playing in the snow weren't even aware that I was taking their picture they were having so much fun. The christmas decorations with the twinkling lights completes the snow play!

My gas logs fireplace with it's flames so warm and inviting. It was snowing outside so I ended up sitting in front of the fire drinking hot chocolate with the lights out,laid back and enjoying the warm and cozy feeling.

On the Utah Car License Plates,..It says,"Ski Utah, the greatest snow on earth." This is very true. It is mostly a dry light snow, which makes for fantastic powder skiing. That is every skiiers dream...to ski powder..It is like flying literally down the mountain when you are skiing through untouched snow. There is no other feeling like it..This is taken from the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon at the Peak of Ski season It just snowed the night before, so it is a Prime setting for the powder skiier!

It is January, and it doesn't seem to matter what time of year it is, the Sunsets at the Great Salt lake are simply breathtaking!

A gentle light from the sun shines on this Blanket of freshly fallen snow..I looked out over this sight of elegant white, and it looked like diamonds gleaming as far as my eyes could see!

This was taken about 4:45 in the afternoon. I knew that El Capitan was waiting for me as soon as I cleared the Wawona Tunnel, but the beautiful clouds caught me off guard. Minutes after I shot this photo, the orange glow was gone.

Last winter, a local orange grove froze. This is actually a frozen orange hanging from a tree. When I saw it, it reminded me of a rose, but my sister says it reminds her of a brain. What do you think?

This grove is located in S. Calif. Its very rare that these orange trees are subject to such harsh weather. The grove survived, and so did the oranges!

Afternoon fog or steam rising near the trees in a partly drained reservoir. There was about 4 feet of snow on the ground. The sun was bright.

These photos were taken in the bed of a reservoir. Many small stumps (trees cut about 95 years ago when the dam was built) are covered with snow. For me, contrary to the Pro Tip + not - compensation keep the snow white and in most cases the texture and highlights are good.

Blue sky, bright sunshine, and crisp new snow on Mt Cheam. It was one of those days! What a day for a roadtrip. What a gift to be alive!

It was a long growing season, and since I did not have the heart to throw out the flowers prematurely, the garden was a display of floral colours right up until the first snowfall. And then, overnight, suddenly, every blossom was covered with a soft blanket of white powder.

Winter in Hawai'i translates as "the rainy season". For us locals that means get ready for wind and rain and we've had a lot of that. It also means clouds which make for brilliant sunrises and sunsets... Photographically speaking, it is the most wonderful time of the year.

Winter on the CA Central Coast doesn't involve snow or ice but a recent January rain made for some quite cool days. Cool enough for a log in the fireplace. This shot was taken from inside the house with the fireplace flames reflected in the window, superimposed on the rose tree outside making the tree look like it is on fire.

This was the weekend that California would truly be California. There was surfing on the coast and skiing in the mountains. It was warm enough for shorts by afternoon. What a glorious day - blue sky, picture perfect. God, I love this. What a way to spend a life.

This was the first snow for the year. It was a beautiful cool sunny day and the warmed trees near me had lost their snow. The distant mountains were covered in frost at the higher elevations and snow lightly covered the mountains between.

I was out in Lewis County, New York taking pictures of freshly fallen snow when I spoted this deer. He hung around long enough to capture him on film.

You are looking at the mountains surrounding Brasstown Bald, the highest elevation in Georgia, 4,784 feet. I am standing on Brasstown Bald, part way up. Located near Blairsville, Geogia.

This was taken after the very big snowfalls in March 2006.

It looks so warm and inviting with sun and a blue sky, but the day was cold. It made a lovely picture though.

When the sun shone on the layers of snow and ice, what a bright and sparkling view we received.

Would have missed it, too close not to go home for the camera. Winter is pretty mild snow wise this year, but the skiers can always go to the mountains, then come back to town to warm up again.

Just a little mix of alot, local ponds in Albuquerque gets crowded in winter

Captured just as the sun was getting strong enough to melt the frost crystals.

This effect was accomplished by changing the saturation of an inverted picture until black and white is almost achieved. Then I changed the hue to push the blue sky to a mysterious deep blue.

creative-challenge-winter - This was a calm storm at the time the photo was taken, but intensified throughout the night. We were camped near this view point. The waves grew to over 30 feet tall and tore out the viewing platform and caused much destruction nearby to housing units a few yards up from this photo location. Blessings, Judy

At the beginning of the storm the wind was strong enough to cause Christina to lean completely into it to stand upright. She lost her balance and the wind and the wind turned her storm suit into an umbrella, causing her to roll backwards, head over heels, many times before she was able to stop herself from blowing over the jetty into the surf! Later that night the waves reached 30 feet and flooded this entire area, including our car and camper, but we stayed put not realizing how bad it got while we slept through it all in our warm and dry beds. We love to watch the waves rolling during the winter at the beach. In this lucky capture a beautiful Eagle was fishing in the surf. I had my yellow filter setting activated which brought out the golden shades of the brilliant sunset. Blessings, Judy

From the sign posted at the upper viewing platform: Do the falls freeze in the winter? No. Although the river surface does freeze each winter, and huge ice formations hang from the brink of the falls, there is always open water at the Upper Falls.

The Lee A. Tregurtha was loading iron ore at the Marquette Ore Docks (Upper Michigan on Lake Superior) on December 26, 2007. As of January 26, 2008, the National Ice Center reported that 98% of Lake Superior (the largest and deepest of the Great Lakes) is 98% covered in ice. If a total freeze-over occurs on Lake Superior, it would be the first time since 1979. The St. Lawrence Seaway (the connection between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean) will not open the 2008 shipping season until March 31 (original season open date was March 25). When the water levels of the Great Lakes are low, carriers (also known as Lakers) cannot carry the heavy loads and most be lighter. Carriers make as many trips as possible during the shipping season and a delay in opening the shipping season can mean a significant loss of revenue. The Sault Locks are still scheduled to open for the 2008 shipping season on March 25 2008.

Each winter the Bald Eagles migrate south down to the areas near the Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois Rivers. It makes it easier for them to catch fish without the rivers being totally frozen solid. A favorite past-time for residents of the Midwest is to go out on day outings in hopes they can spot an eagle and maybe get a photograph or two. P1220946

At times, when watching a storm before your eyes, you may discover that you are not the only one doing the watching. Can you see what I saw when I looked at these beech tree boughs? Old scars from a long-ago pruning have caused an interesting effect.

My husband and his 9N Ford tractor. I think it looks like it should have a giant wind-up key, but it's a good little workhorse, and he loves it.

One of my favorite spots - The Dey Mansion, Wayne NJ - General George Washington’s revolutionary war headquarters July, October and November of 1780 in the Preakness Valley. The house was constructed between 1740-1750 by Dirck Dey, a Dutch-born planter. Periodically throughout the year the park commission holds militia re-enactments here.

The growing darkness makes it look like there's a fire inside

It's maybe 3 cm "tall" (about 1,2 inches) at the most and I saw it when we went out ice-fishing. This one and several others was "growing" out of the river-ice... don't know how they came to be... there doesn't seem to be anything inside of them either... I guess it's just one of those things...

It snowed today on the valley floor of Oregon. So soft and wet. I went out and was able to capture a few pictures. This is one of my favorites.

Worst Ice storm in the history of Texas. This day was very very cold, dark, dreary. The ice cycles actually stayed hanging from my porch for nearly three days...really wierd for Texas...especially south Texas

Winnipeg officially opened the WORLDS longest skating trail today.. Thousands of Winnipegger's laced on the skates on this day to skate the trails on our river system. The skating trail measuring 8.54 kilometres, will surpass the previous Guinness World record set on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. The skating trail starts on the Red River where it loops to Whittier Park and on to the Norwood Bridge. It extends on down the Assiniboine River and winds up at Omand's Creek near the Polo Park Shopping Center. BETTER SEEN FULLSCREEN...
