picture: 1804 Mary Nisbet, Countess Elgin
published by: gogm1
By Francois, Baron Gerard. According to the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh, "Mary Nisbet's dark hair and velvet dress complement her light skin. The artist has carefully defined the delicate ruff of the high lace collar, the touches of gold in the embroidered decoration and her fine jewellery. The portrait was probably painted in Paris where Mary's husband, Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, was British Ambassador. She interceded successfully on his behalf when he was imprisoned in 1803, after Napoleon revoked the Treaty of Amiens, ending the temporary peace between Britain and France." She was involved in getting the notorious Elgin Marbles out of Greece when her husband was ambassador to the Ottomans when they occupied Greece. The "waist" line is almost just below the breasts, the "Empire" waist. Her gown is adorned with a flashback to the 1500s, a ruff. This era saw some remarkable use of embroidery, jewelry, etc. to embellish the otherwise simple dresses. Hairdos were also elaborate - notice the abundant curls.

She is dressed a little more simply, though not much.
