Hanukkah, also called the Festival of Lights, celebrates the restoration of the Temple in Jerusalem almost 2,200 years ago following a successful revolt by the Hebrews against their Greek-Syrian rulers. Like many of our holidays, there is a miracle involved, which reminds us of our connection to the Creator of the Universe. In short, when the Hebrews retook Jerusalem and cleaned the Temple, as the story goes, they found only enough pure oil to light the Eternal Light for one day. After much debate (of course) over whether to light the Light as soon as possible or wait until more oil could be brought from the closest source -- a delay of at least a week -- those of unshakeable trust won the argument. The Eternal Light was relit without delay and one day's amount of oil burned for eight days, until more pure oil could be secured. A miracle, indeed. One of many in the land of miracles on a planet of miracles. The word "Hanukkah" in Hebrew has the same root letters as the Hebrew word for "education". So at the time of the year when darkness is at its greatest the answer is to educate. Or illuminate. To bring understanding through Light. Not just a miracle. But a mission. And not just for the Hebrews but for all mankind. We are all Children of the Earth and all Children of the Light. May the Lighting of each day's candles further brighten and hasten our way forward.
