Here is a picture of one of Reykjavik´s best known landmarks, the church Hallgrímskirkja. (literally: the church of Hallgrímur). It is named after an Icelandic clergyman from the 1600s, who was also a great poet. With it´s 75 metres, Hallgrímskirkja is still Iceland´s tallest building (!), although it is just about to be surpassed by a officebuilding wich is under construction. (Almost a little bit sad, I think). The statue in front of the building is of the viking Leifur Eiríksson, or "Leif the lucky", who discovered America in the year 1003. The statue was a gift from the United States of America in 1930 at the Althing festival, when Iceland celebrated 1000 years of parliament. (The Icelandic parliament, Alþingi (Althing), was founded in the year 930).
