From 1799 - 1867 the Russian - American Company was the only governing power in Alaska. Headquartered at Kodiak and later Sitka, Russia's interest in Alaska waned with the decline in the overhunted furbearing animals and it's decline on the home front. In 1867, US Secretary of State William Seward purchased Alaska from Russia for only $7.2 million. Though more than 100 years after the transfer, Russian influence in architecture, the Russian Orthodox Church, place names and surnames remain in the 49th state.
