Building the "bigger/better" pond - a never ending experience!
published by piggerma
I lived with bare liner, exposed pipes, board-covered trenches - a real mess - over winter and Spring '03. Finally the weather improved and we started fixing things up. It's late August at this time, and we *still* have tons to do!

Finally! The pipes are buried and we begin to build the waterfall and stream.

My Koi Ponds & Fish

Pond is still murky and needed a cleaning. Fake Lily pads used until Water Lettuce and water hyacinth become available. Floating plants make fish less visible to predators overhead and provide shade from sun which promotes algae.

Pond is little over 1 yr old. Koi and Comets started out 4-6 inches and are now 6-12 inches long. They grow fast! Largest Koi lost the red patches as it grew. Smaller Comets are parents of the all the little ones. Plans are to widen the pond in 2008.

Mild Winter with little snow in Plainfield Illinois. Yes, those are fake lily and lotus pads in the pond providing cover for the fish from predators and to help reduce the sunlight which promotes green water. 4 months old and 1st winter.

New pond being dug in my backyard over 3 weekends and a couple days off during the week. Kidney Shaped and 21 Ft long and 5 to 9 Ft wide. Depth is 2 ft.
published by gassyone2
Initial inhabitants are 4 Koi and 4 Sarassa Comets. Added another Koi after 1 Koi disappeared for a week then reappeared for 9 total. Sizes range from 4 to 6 inches (6 to 12 after 1 yr!). Stones and rock eventually covered by algae.

First summer for the pond. Koi are growing and the plants becoming established. Plenty of Frogs and Dragonflies visit often. The 4 comets are 2 males and 2 females.
