from album: [1] MANCHESTER, NH, home of many French-Canadian immigrants
The largest city in NH, Manchester, also known as the QUEEN CITY, attracted 23,000 French-Canadians, who made up 40% of the Manchester, NH population by 1900. They came because of the work available in the mills along the Merrimack River.

Immigrants from Quebec began heading south before the Civil War (1856-1865). From 1840 to 1930, approximately 900,000 French-Canadians immigrated to the U.S. The first left the Beauce region of Québec and others from the rest of the province followed. Of course, New Brunswick and Acadia provided their share of immigrants. The "Beaucerons," as they were called, headed toward Maine, along what was known as "The Old Canada Road," some settling in the St. John river area.
