Great Lakes freighter off the Whitefish Point shores on Lake Superior. The freighter seemed to be so close to the beach! The lighthouse is integral in guiding freighters around Whitefish Point, typically headed to and from the Sault Locks. The Locks were built so that ships could navigate past the rapids between the St. Mary's River and Lake Superior.
"The St. Marys River flows in the narrow, geologically constricted passageway, which links three of North America's Great Lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan. One has only to glance at a map or satellite photograph to recognize the strategic importance of the St. Marys. It is the "Hub of the Great Lakes", the key hydrological, ecological and transportation link in the Great Lakes system." - http://www.chrs.ca/Rivers/StMarys/StMarys-F_e.htm
