Voando abaixo da altitude recomendada, o DC-7 acabou colidindo com um pequeno morrote, o único em toda a região, a aproximadamente 3 km da cabeceira da pista. Morreram os pilotos José Carlos Bonino Pacheco de Freitas, Pery Moacir Huber, Waldemar de Amorim Rocha, Hugo Tenan, os radiotelegrafistas Antônio Da Cunha Leite e Hélio Chevrand e os demais ocupantes, com exceção de um ocupante e de uma comissária.
