While in no way spectacular, this photo reminds me of my first efforts to shoot wide-angled, action shots, without looking through the viewfinder of the camera. It features poor timing and an unfortunate angle where the board obscures Sam's face. Properly developed and refined, this skill becomes particularly handy in skateboard photography, where, working the lip of a ramp or pool, one wouldn't necessarily want to place one's head, face or body as close to the action as the camera. The technique also allows for quick, last-instant position adjustment, without having to review the image in the viewfinder. Over the intervening years, this image, such as it is, has become much more important as the first of a set of two photographs. (See next image)

There are not many photographs of me, working as a photographer. However, this one was taken by a friend, just a fraction of a second after I shot the preceding photo in this album. As it relates to Sam's movement, this photo is much better timed than mine, showing Sam much nearer the peak of his action. It also showed me, at the time, that I could still have been closer to the action.
