Agassiz' Rock at the southeastern end of the Blackford Quarry, is a site of historic and international importance. Here in 1840, the Swiss geologist Louis Agassiz proclaimed to his Scottish fellow geologists "This is the work of an ice sheet" when he saw the polished and striated undercut base of the cliff. Though much of the evidence that he saw here has now gone, as pieces of rock have fallen away, this spot was the culmination of evidence from all over Scotland, and marks the first recognition in the world of the reality of former ice sheets in regions where there is no no ice.
