The Blincos drove us 75 km north to Maroochydore, where they had rented a luxurious apartment on the ocean front. From there we toured the Sunshine Coast and points of interest inland.
published by burnshuh
With the Blincos we visited Fraser Island, about 100 km north of Maroochydore. It is the world's largest sand island and features not only vast sand beaches, such as 75 Mile Beach, but also rain forests and small freshwater lakes.
published by burnshuh
We flew from Brisbane to Cairns and then were cabbed a further 80 km north to the resort town of Port Douglas, where we stayed for 6 days. Port Douglas is one of the major tourism gateways to the Great Barrier Reef, which lies 30-40 km from the mainland.
published by burnshuh
This was our hotel for our 6 nights in Port Douglas. We had a room with a kitchenette and a nice balcony overlooking tropical foliage.
published by burnshuh
We took a day-long 4WD tour of Daintree National Park, about 50 km north of Port Douglas. The tour included a rain forest walk, several lookouts, and a crocodile cruise. It concluded with a visit to Mossman Gorge.
published by burnshuh
While in Port Douglas we took a day-long trip out to the Agincourt Reef about 60 km northeast of Port Douglas. Barb snorkelled on the outer reef while Barrie took a short cruise looking at the corals from a semi-submersible craft.
published by burnshuh
A selection of interesting signs we encountered in our travels on the continent.
published by burnshuh
On the final leg of our 2,040 km odyssey to the Red Centre of the continent, we crossed from Queensland into the Northern Territory and headed on to the almost oasis-like Alice Springs.
published by burnshuh
We stayed overnight at the Grand Hotel in this small town (pop. 1,500). Two highways meet at Hughenden - the Kennedy Developmental Road, on which we travelled from the north, and the Flinders Highway, the main east-west route in these parts.
published by burnshuh
Day 2 of our westward voyage took us a further 600 km to Wirrilyerna Station, in western Queensland. The land became flatter and drier but also more hauntingly beautiful the further west we travelled.
published by burnshuh
We stayed overnight at this 125,000 acre ranch in western Queensland, roughly 1350 km southwest of Cairns. Here we learned a bit about life in the harsh Outback - children schooled by radio and the farm-generated power shut down daily from 10 pm to 5 am.

The capital of the Northern Territory, strikingly set in a valley of the MacDonnell Ranges. We spent most of our only day here at the Desert Park, an outstanding introduction to the region's wildlife.
published by burnshuh
Canberra was planned in 1912 as a parkland city with magnificent vistas centred around an artificial lake. It took 50 years to fully realize the master plan. Barb attended the International Conference on Interlending and Document Supply here.
published by burnshuh
We spent three days in Sydney, attending two operas at the Sydney Opera House and exploring Sydney Harbour and the downtown near Darling Harbour.
published by burnshuh
From Canberra we headed south in our rented car to tour the south coast of Victoria. Out route took us through Bega, out to the coast at Eden and then followed the coast to Lakes Entrance.
published by burnshuh
From Lakes Entrance we drove to Phillip Island, viewed the night migration of the Little Penguins, stayed overnight at Holmwood House Guest House in Cowes and then took a ferry across Port Phillip Bay to the eastern end of the Great Ocean Road.
published by burnshuh
