We have been fortunate to be allowed to see some of the most outstanding collections of rare and unusual books and manuscripts all over Europe. None was any more spectacular than the Strahov. That large book at the center of the other end of the room is the Strahov New Testament of the 9th-10th century, a valuable monument of the Ottonian Renaissance in the circle of the School of Trier, written in Latin on parchment using gold uncian writing. This is one of the oldest written documents surviving in the Czech Republic, together with the Fragments of Gospel according to St. Mark and the famous Vysehrad Codex. The library has a total of some five thousand manuscripts representing book culture from the 10th-18th century.
