Xi'an, one of the six ancient capitals in China, served as the seat of 12 imperial capitals or dynasties for 1,120 years. It was called Chang'an in ancient times, and is now the capital of Shaanxi province.

The city walls were built during the Ming dynasty (1368 A.D.-1644 A.D.). The walls are flat and straight and 14 miles (22km) in total. The walls are 12 m high, and about the same width at the top. Previously built of rammed earth, it was surfaced with grey bricks in 1568, it has 5,984 arrow-shooting holes and 98 ramparts. this is the biggest and best-preserved city wall of ancient China
