In 1631 one of Louis XIII's top advisors commissioned Francois Mansart, the most prestigious architect of the day, to construct a magnificent residence. For the next several centuries, the counts of Balleroy presided over the grounds, but in 1970 leather-clad press prince Malcolm Forbes bought the property and restored it. Every two years (odd-numbered), in the third week of June, there's a balloon festival on the grounds of the chateau.

Malcolm Forbes also created a museum devoted to ballooning, a hobby he pursued avidly in his time away from running Forbes magazine. Balloon history and examples of elephant, sphinx, Beethoven and minaret balloons are amusing, even if you're not allowed to forget Forbes, his exploits, his friends or his magazine for an instant.
