My Trip to Italy

Pictures about cinque-terre

After dropping our bags at the hotel in La Spezia, we went on to Riomaggiore, the first of the five towns that comprise the Cinque Terre. This bit of Italian coastline on the Ligurian Sea was first described in medieval times as "the five lands." In the feudal era, this land was watched over by castles. Tiny communities grew up in their protective shadows, ready to run inside at the first hint of a Turkish Saracen pirate raid. Marauding pirates from North Africa were a persistent problem (the last major raid was in 1545). As the threat of pirates faded, the villages prospered, catching fish and growing grapes. Churches were enlarged with a growing population. But until the advent of tourism in this generation, the towns remained isolated Even today, traditions survive, and each of the five villages comes with a distinct dialect and its own proud heritage.

The Cinque Terre towns were extremely isolated until the last century. Villagers rarely married anyone from outside their town. After the blasting of the second train line in the 1920's, a trail was made between the first two towns of the five: Riomaggiore and Manarola. Happy with the trail, the villagers asked that it be improved as a permanent connection between neighbors. But persistent landslides kept the trail closed more than it was open. After World War II, the trail was reopened, and became established as a lovers' meeting point for boys and girls from the two towns. (After one extended closure in 1949, the trail was reopened for a Christmas marriage.) A journalist, who noticed all the amorous graffiti along the path, coined the trail's now-established name, "Via dell'Amore." Recent major construction work -- tunnels and protective nets to hold falling boulders -- will make the trail safer and keep it open.
