The large bus turned around in Bagnoregio and a small one picked us up for the last short ride to a parking area at the base of Umbria's grand but dying hill town, Civita. This was taken from the bus at the turnaround, looking at Civita in the distance.

The small bus drops us at a parking area below Civita. Only small vehicles, like the one in this picture can negotiate the narrow bridge connecting Civita to the outside world. This lifeline supplies everything to the town and keeps it alive -- barely. Only 14 residents -- mostly in their 80's -- remain as, bit by bit, the town is being purchased by rich big-city Italians who come here to escape on vacation. Civita's history goes back to Etruscan and ancient Roman times. In the early Middle Ages, Bagnoregio was a suburb of Civita, which had a population of around 4,000. Later, Bagnoregio surpassed Civita in size.
