The Old Town House is a fine Georgian building restored by the University with the help of the Aberdeen City Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The coat of arms visible on this, the east side, is that of the Kings of Scotland with an imperial crown and is of unknown origin and date.
Behind the large timber door barely visible at the edge of the picture was kept the handcart used for picking up drunks from the streets and transporting thenm back to the cells to sleep it off. You can see a vent in the side of the building, which was a source of light and air into the two police cells at the rear.

Dr. Angus Miller, right in blue shirt, led our excursion to Arthur's Seat, the ancient volcano which shaped much of the geology of the Edinburgh region. Angus studied geology at the University of Edinburgh and then got a PhD at Durham University investigating volcanic earthquakes in Iceland.
