We moved on to Dundee, where we explored the Discovery, the famous Polar exploration vessel commanded by 33 year old Robert Falcon Scott. Discovery was one of the last wooden three-masted ships built in Britain and the first to be constructed specifically for scientific research. Built in Dundee, the Discovery sails from Cowes under the command of Scott on 6 August 1901 for South Trinidad and the Cape. After leaving New Zealand, she finally crosses the Antarctic Circle on 3 January, 1902. The first sighting of Antarctica is made five days later. Edward VII Land is discovered on 30 January. She reaches her winter quarters at Ross Island, McMurdo Sound on 8 February. Living quarters are erected at Hut Point and preparations made for the over-wintering of the expedition. Discovery is soon locked in the ice, where she is destined to remain for over two years. Much scientific research is undertaken during this time, gathering a great wealth of specimens and enriching our knowledge of the Antarctic. A number of expeditions are mounted into Antarctica. A heroic attempt on the Pole is made by the Southern Party, consisting of Scott, Shackleton and Wilson. The attempt fails, but a record-breaking southern latitude is achieved. Finally after two winters locked in the Antarctic ice, Discovery was freed and returned home in 1904.
