Built over 100 years ago; officially named on April 13th, 1899 for Major General Seth Williams (an Augusta native) who served in the civil war; this fortification consisted of 75.5 acres at Portland Head; consisted of three batteries--Sullivan (completed in 1896 and named for major General John Sullivan, decommissioned in 1929), DeHart completed in 1897 and named for Captain Henry V. DeHart, placed in reserve on reduced maintenance in 1934), and Hobart (completed on April 16th, 1898 and named for 1st. Lt. Henry A Hobart, deactivated in 1929). Two final batteries were constructed in 1906, they were Garesche (Garesche was deactivated in 1929) and Keyes. On june 30, 1962 Fort Williams officially closed and was put up for sale. On June 29, 1964 the residents of Cape Elizabeth voted to buy Fort Williams, their offer of $200,000 was accepted and they acquired Fort Williams on December 1, 1964.
