The entire structure defines the origin of Kathmandu Valley from a great lake guarded by the Karkotak Nag (serpent). It also merges the mythes of 4 main Buddhas as described in Nepal Mahatmaya. At the top we can see the Dome of Swoyumbhu (yellow in color) above Lotus - the Guheshwori (as supposed to be originated from Lotus seed sowen by the Bipaswi buddha)
