Next stop: St. Andrews, not for the golf (your secret is safe with me, Bob) but for the historic University. Here we visit the Bell Pettigrew Museum at the School of Biology, University of St. Andrews. The origins of its Victorian Natural History Collection date to 1838, when the St. Andrews Literary and Philosophical Society was formed, its aims including the founding of a Museum. This soon became substantial and popular, but in the later 19th century the Society declined and the collections were taken over by the University in 1904, and installed in the Bell Pettigrew Museum in 1912. The museum displays, including Dura Den fossil fish, extensive collections of birds and several species now extinct continue to excite both students and visitors. The museum itself, with its century old cases and mosaic floor, is a remarkable survivor from the Edwardian age.
