picture: Leaving The Park
published by: hmghmw
This was the last of the park. Sunset was just a few minutes away. Think about what the Lakota (a branch of the Sioux tribe) thought when they looked out over this land. Where the actual name "Badlands" comes from is not known. The Lakota tribe called them mako sica which is translated as "land bad." Since Lakota believed everything in the world was an expression of deity Wakan Tanka, it's thought they felt the Badlands were a land that was not of much use. They really couldn't hunt here so here is all this beautiful land they could not use. All information was abstracted from "Badlands" The Story Behind The Scenery.
picture: Lakota Sweat Lodge 04a
published by: ladylynn
© 2005 Lynn Wood - During a stop in South Dakota, we were shown two Lakota Sweat Lodges: one just a frame and the other with its covering. We were told the covered one had been used in a ceremony the week before.
This was hanging outside the uncovered sweat lodge.
