picture: Elk Mom and Calf Trot Alongside the Road Near Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone
published by: paul_fernandez
Unlike bulls, Elk cows do not grow antlers. They do not have to intimidate and/or combat rivals. Cows give birth alone, but later gather in small to large groups of cows and their calves (no males). These are only two of a group of about half a dozen cows and as many calves that crossed the road right in front of our vehicle and then trotted alongside the road for a few dozen yards (m).
