Manarola is a tumble of buildings along a ravine. The stream which sustained the town is now covered over but may still be seen and heard in a few places. As in Riomaggiore and Vernazza, Manarola's stream was covered over by a modern sewage system after World War II. Before that time, romantic bridges arched over its ravine. Waterwheels once powered the local olive oil industry.
